CIF-SS Boys III-AA Championship:
Bishop Montgomery Wins Title--(Mar. 2, 2001)
80-67. That was the final score as Bishop Montgomery, for the second year in a row, defeated Compton Centennial for the Divison III-AA Southern Section Championship. This was a game where Bishop Montgomery brought their hammers and saws, chisels and drills, and just went to work. Methodically, systematically, they pounded Centennial into submission, and at the half led 44-23 and the game was over. In fact, it was over in the first quarter, when the score was 24-13, it was just that Centennial, which lost to the Knights last year in the finals also, didn't quite know it yet. But with every possession, he game got further and further out of reach, and the Cravens, Errick and Derrick, just got better, faster, bigger and stronger anyone the Apaches had to offer up. This game was so one-sided that it literally took the Centennial coaching staff a few minutes into the half before they could bring themselves to get up off the bench and join the players in the locker room. Centennial made a valiant run in the third quarter and then again in the fourth, but they never got any closer than 11 points, and the game was never in doubt, particularly after Anthony Davis, Centennial's only real scoring threat last night, fouled out with about 4 minutes left ot play and Centennial trailing by 15. Derrick scored 21 points, and Errick scored 19. Between them they had 13 rebounds, but most remarkable of all was the Knights' shooting percentages: 72.1 % from the field for the game (73% in the first half) compared to Centennial's mere 47.8%. Davis finished with a game high 24, but he only shot 4-10 from three point range (not bad, but it really was their only offense last night besides Roscoe Biggers' infrequent attempts to drive into the lane).
This was another record-setting performance though for the Knights (26-2), and it marked the 4th time in four years that Bishop Montgomery has made it to the finals, the second in a row that they've won the title. Three years ago, Bishop Montgomery lost to San Dimas, and then in 1998, it was Chaminade when both Scott Borchart and the Cravens were just freshmen. But last night, it was all Bishop, and the stats below tell almost the whole story. The one thing they can't capture is just how hard the Cravens play, how tough DeVaughn Peace was, and how determined this Bishop Montgomery team really is. . . While they may see Centennial again in the State Regionals (as they did last year), we don't know of a team in their division who really has the horses to beat them. Guess we'll all find out next week. . .
