DIVISION V-AA

Santa Clara 72, Verbum Dei 70 (OT)--Alex Minney scored seven of his 20 points in overtime as the No. 16-seeded Saints upset No. 1-seeded Verbum Dei at Santa Clara. Verbum Dei's Deon Marcus hit a three-pointer with six seconds to play to force overtime. Richard Cheney scored 28 points for the Eagles (24-4). Albert Soria scored 26 points, including six three-pointers in the first half, for the Saints (15-10). The Saints scored the final five points to dump No. 1-seed Verbum Dei, 72-70, from the CIF-Southern Section Division V-AAtournament in overtime -- prompting an on-court celebration at Friedrich Pavilion.  Santa Clara,  the Frontier League champion, has won 12 of its last 13 games.  Santa Clara jumped out to a 14-5 lead. Verbum Dei, the Camino Real champion, took its first lead with 2:22 left in the first half after swingman Richard Chaney (game-high 28 points) banked in a 3-pointer. But Soria restored the momentum to Santa Clara with two late treys, giving the Saints a 34-31 haltime lead. Verbum Dei's frontcourt --including 6-foot-6 Martin Starr, 6-foot-7 Deon Marcus, and 6-foot-8 James Mathews-Muhammed --towered over the Santa Clara frontcourt. Three football bodies --5-foot-10 Tim Lajoie, 6-foot-0 Tim Linzey and 6-foot-1 --kept the taller Eagles off the boards with their 200 pounds frames. Santa Clara held onto its lead after a slow third quarter, 46-44. Santa Clara almost sewed up the win in regulation. It led 61-56 with 58 seconds left before 3-pointers by guard Michael Lay (12 points) and Deon Marcus (9 points) sent the game to an extra session. Verbum Dei took a 70-67 overtime lead, but Santa Clara scored the final five points to seal it. Center Alex Minney (22 points), a transfer from Ventura, had four points on a putback and two free throws in the final 1:34 of overtime. Minney sprained his right ankle early in the first quarter but played well on it. Point guard Adrian Santana hit 1 of 2 free throws with 10 seconds remaining to set up a dramatic finale. A Chaney drive spun out and Verdum Dei had four offensive rebounds in an attempt to tied the game. None of them did. Verbum Dei (70) — Starr 6, Barber 1, Chaney 28, Lay 12, Bell 11, Muhammed 1, Marcus 9, Mathews-Muhammed 2. Santa Clara (72) — Santana 6, Soria 26, Linzey 6, Minney 22, Lajoie 10, Ramirez 2. SC --16  18   12  18  6--70; Verbum Dei--9  22  13  20  8--72; 3-Point goals — Verbum Dei 5 (Chaney 2, Lay 2, Marcus). Santa Clara 7 (Soria 6, Minney). Fouled out — Ramirez, Lay. Records — Santa Clara 15-10.

Desert 70, Ribet Academy 53-- Desert (21-4) advanced to the Southern Section Division V-AA quarterfinals with the 17-point win over Ribet Academy (19-3). The Scorpions will now face the winner of the Verbum Dei-Santa Clara game that was also played Tuesday night. For Desert, senior Sidney Melvin led the way with 26 points while junior Anthony Bernard scored 15 and senior Terrance Brown scored 14.

Serra 57, Chadwick 53--Despite a game high 25 points from Michael Reich, and Peter McCaslin's 20 points, Serra's junior forward Eric McNeal hit both ends of a one-and-one with 20 seconds remaining to break a 53-53 tie to give Serra the win over Chadwick in a third-round game at Chadwick on Tuesday.  Serra (16-12) advances and will now play Desert, which beat Ribet last night. The game will take place at Serra, which won the coin toss.  McNeal's free throws came after Chadwick forward Mike Reich missed a 10-footer that would have given the Dolphins a 55-53 lead. Instead, Reich fouled McNeal to stop the clock, and when McNeal made the baskets, his only points of the night, that ended Chadwick's season. Reich also finishe with a game-high 11 rebounds.    Following McNeal's free throws, Chadwick's McCaslin dribbled downcourt, penetrated and was fouled by Serra's Eugene Jeter.  McCaslin's free throw, also a one-and-one, missed, and Chadwick got the rebound.  Wes Putnam passed to McCaslin, who launched a floater which didn't drop, and when Serra's Willie Asberry rebounded the ball, Chadwick had no choice but to foul with 2 seconds remaining.  Asberry made both shots for the final margin of victory. Asberry led the Cavaliers with 16 points, nine in the fourth quarter; Jeter added 14.

Kilpatrick 109, Arrowhead Christian 71-- Arrowhead Christian Academy's two-point basketball loss to L.A. Kilpatrick during a pre-season tournament in Ontario was only a reading of false hope.  The Mustangs (24-1), hosting the Eagles (21-7) in a CIF, Division V-AA quarterfinal playoff at Brentwood High School on Wednesday,  beat ACA by 38 points, 109-71, and one player, Keilon Fortune, had more than half the total points scored by Arrowhead--43.  But it was not just Keilon Fortune, and rumors that this is a one-dimensional team are just that. . . rumors.  Kilpatrick also got 27 poitns from Adam Townsend, and 12 from Javier Dena.  Townsend finished with 9 rebounds,   while Dena had 13. ACA was led by senior Adam Dohner (6'-5" F) with 26 points.   Arrowhead Christian - Nick Goltry 19, Chris Carter 1, Chris Becerra 15, Josh Breckley 2, Adam Dohner 26, Jacob Goltry 8.  Kilpatrick - Keilon Fortune 43, Adam Townsen 27, Oscar Laporte 5, Charles Taylor 2, Javier Dena 12, Edwin Mora 12, Dominic Lacoste 7, Dominic Johnson 1.  Arrowhead Christian23 13 18 17 - 71  L.A. Kilpatrick27 25 27 30 - 109  Three-point field goals - Adam Dohner (A) 2, Chris Becerra (A) 3, Edwin Mora (K) 4, Keilon Fortune (K) 5, Oscar Laporte (K) 1. Fouled out - Javier Dena (K). Technical fouls - None.  Arrowhead Christian record - 21-7. L.A. Kilpatrick record - 24-1.

Buckley 77, Montclair Prep 76 (OT)--All-CIF senior combo-forward Colin Ward-Heninger (6'-4" Sr. F/G) scored 28 points, including two free throws with 5.3 seconds left in overtime, and All-CIF junior point guard David Gale (6'-1" Jr. PG) scored 19 points and 8 assists, including five three pointers, to give third-seeded Buckley (24-3) an exciting 77-76 victory over Montclair Prep in a Division V-AA third-round game Tuesday night at Montclair Prep. Eric Kaufman scored 21 points for the unseeded Mounties (13-14), including five three-point baskets, but missed a three-point shot at the overtime buzzer. The game was a rematch of a playoff last year that Buckley won, 70-66. Robert Lewis had 27 points, and Derek Daniels and Garen Hartunian each added 10 for Montclair Prep, which led, 63-54, with 1:42 left in regulation. Down by 9, with time running out, David Gale nailed a 3-pointer to cut into the lead.   On the next possession, Ward-Henniger hit a three, and then Royal Weaver also hit a three-pointer.  With under 20 seconds left, and the game tied at 65-65, Montclair Prep substituted Charlie Kranzdorf into the game, who had played sparingly up to that point.  With Kaufman unable to get off a shot on the wing, and time expiring, he swung the ball to Kranzdorf at the top of the key, and he hit a 10-foot jumper with only 6.1 second remaining in what seemed like the game winning shot.  But Gale inbounded the ball to Buckley's Alex Clancy, who raced up the court, and managed to lay a bounce pass between three Montclair defenders to a waiting Steve Broukhim, who made a layup as the buzzer expired in regulation with the score tied at 67-67.  In the overtime, Buckley took advantage of two Montclair Prep players fouling out, and eventually Ward-Henninger hit the two free throws with just 5.3 showing on the clock. Montclair Prep's Kaufman managed to get off yet another three point attempt from the baseline corner, but it clanked off the rim as time expired, and Buckley picked up the victory for the second year in a row.  Buckley will host Granada Hills Hillcrest Christian on Friday night in a quarterfinal matchup.

Granada Hills Hillcrest Christian 55, Flintridge Prep 51--Amrit Nat scored 24 points to lead the Eagles of Granada Hills to a close win over the Rebels of La Canada in a Division V-AA game at L.A. Baptist High of North Hills. Nat came out red hot in the first half, scoring 19 points to spot Hillcrest to a comfortable 35-21 halftime lead. Tim Mercer had 15 points and nine rebounds and Connor O'Byrne had 21 points, helping the Rebels make a game of it in the second half and leading a rally that cut the lead to two points, 44-42, at the start of the fourth quarter. But Hillcrest made another run to extend the lead back to eight. Flintridge managed to cut a 14 point deficit to four, but never got closer.

Yeshiva 71, Western Christian 55--The Lancers (23-6) fell behind in the second quarter and never could quite recover during their third-round loss in a game played at Azusa Pacific. Adi Issacs had 18 points and 15 of those came on five 3-pointers.  Shawn Lokar finished with 13 points, eight rebounds and seven assists, while Brad Meister, who was saddled with early foul trouble, had 14 points and seven rebounds.

Downey Calvary Chapel 64, Rolling Hills Prep 49-- Junior forward Matt Henderson scored 22 points and junior guard Tim Drisdom scored 17 points, 14 assists and 12 rebvounds.  Jon James had 15 points for CC Downey (24-4), which will play Yeshiva in the quarterfinals.  Henderson shot 11-13 from the field and held RHP's best shooter, Curtis Allen to just 12 points, 12 below his season average.
