CIF-SS Boys V-AA Bracket Update:
Quarter & Semifinal Results & Details--(Feb. 28, 2001)

We've been unavoidably pulled away from the site for the last few days due to some personal business, and to those who offered their condolences, thank you.  But life goes on, and so do the playoffs.  We've already reported the scores and the details from last Friday's semifinals games, but didn't get a chance to update the brackets.  There were no games on Tuesday (obviously, since the semifinals were played last Friday in this bracket) but we're posting the details again, so they're all centrally located.

The finals will feature Kilpatrick (26-1) v. Calvary Chapel Downey (26-4) and the game will be played this Saturday, at the unseemly hour of 8:30 a.m.   If you can get up that early to make it down there, you should see some excellent basketball.  We'll have a full preview of both teams tomorrow.

The quarterfinals were played on Friday and Saturday night. Results are below and in the updated bracket;   details for all games except the Calvary v. Yeshiva game are at this link (the latter game was played on Saturday night at Brentwood HS, and because of our personal situation referred to above, we didn't get a chance to write up the details. . . ):

Desert 54, Santa Clara 53
No. 4 Kilpatrick 90, Serra 85 (OT)
GH Hillcrest 66, No. 3 Buckley 64
No. 2 Calvary Chapel Downey 57, Yeshiva 53

Semifinal Results and Details are below, followed by the updated bracket.

Kilpatrick 70, Desert 60
Calvary Chapel Downey 68, GH Hillcrest Christian 63

Kilpatrick 70, Desert 69-- Kilpatrick continued with its winning ways, coming back from a 5 point deficit with under a minute to play, and they've now won 23 straight games, with the only loss this season coming to Agoura early at the Montclair Prep tournament in December. Usually it's been Keilon Fortune (6'-1" Sr. PG), who was Tyson Chandler's teammate since the early days of SCA club ball and who would have been at Dominguez this year but-for an unfortunate incident with the authorities which sent him to Kilpatrick, a facility for juvenile offenders.   But this time, on Tuesday night, it was Fortune's 6'-6" Sr. teammate, Javier Dena who made a three-point play with 1.7 seconds remaining to give the Mustangs (26-1) the one-point win over Sidney Melvin's Desert team in the Divsion V-AA semifinals at Brentwood HS. Dena finished with 9 points on the night. Trailing, and with just 6.5 seconds remaining, Kilpatrick inbounded the ball Fortune, who drove the lane and missed a five-foot jumper. Dena grabbed the rebound over two defenders, scored and was fouled.   Desert managed to get off a half court shot at the buzzer, but Sidney Melvin's long, arcing shot bounced off the rim and Desert (22-5) ended their season. Keilon finished with 31 points, 8 off his playoff average of 39. He also had six assists and 8 steals, and Adam Townsend had 11 for the No. 3 seeded team.  Melvin was the leading scorer for Desert with 26, including a three with 1:03 in the fourth quarter which gave Desert the five point lead with a minute to go, 69-64. Dominic Lacoste ten hit a free throw for the Mustangs, and grabbed a rebound when Dena missed another free thorw, and cut the lead to 2, 69-67 with 22 seconds on the clock.  Jabez Williams of Desert then went to the line, but missed the front end of the one-and-one, and with 10.5seconds and the clock running, Dena pulled down the rebound, made the outlet to Keilon, who quickly got the ball up court as the Mustangs called time out to diagram their final play, which had Keilon taking the shot.  He missed, and Dena followed with the three point play and the win.  Edwin Mora finished with 9 points for Kilpatrick.. Desert--Jones 14, Midrop 11, Hutchinson 5, Bernard 9, Melvin 26 and 4 steals, Brown 4.   Kilpatrick--Morea 9, Townsend 11, Laporte 2, Lacoste 5, D. Johnson 2, Dena 9, Fortune 31, 8 steals and 6 assists.

Calvary Chapel Downey 69, GH Hillcrest Christian 63--We attended only the fourth quarter of this game due to some personal matters which precluded us from watching any ball over the weekend. . .wait, there wasn't any after Friday night's quarterfinals, right?  But when we arrived at the Faith Baptist gym in Canoga Park on Tuesday night with 8 minutes left to play in the game, it looked like the end of the line for Calvary Chapel Downey, as they trailed by 12 points, 47-59.  But an amazing thing happened to the Grizzlies on their way to oblivion on Tuesday night. . . they staged a miraculous come-from-behind win, and held GH Hillcrest Christian to just 4 fourth quarter points, outscoring the Eagles 21-4 in the final quarter behind junior guard Tim Drisdom's back-to-back three pointers for the win. The Grizzlies (26-4), the No 2 seed,  will now move on to the V-AA finals on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. at the Pond where they'll play Kilpatrick the No. 4 seed.  Both the No. 3 seeded Buckley Griffins and the No. 1 seeded Verbum Dei Eagles were eliminated, Verb in the third round by a determined Santa Clara team, and Buckley in last Friday night's quarterfinals, a two-point upset by GH Hillcrest which set up Tuesday night's matchup.   The Grizzlies beat Yeshiva last Saturday in another comeback win.    Drisdom scored 28 points, including those two consecutive three pointers, the first which put CCD up by two, and the second which was the exclamation point and the dagger in the heart for Hillcrest.  Interestingly, it was the same motion stalling offense which had worked so well for Hillcrest in the first three quarters and which opened up the perimeter shooting which was their undoing in the final quarter. The stalling allowed Downey to regroup and recoup their energy, and it helped Drisdom especially, who had picked up his fourth foul midway through the final quarter.  Tim scored 12 points in the quarter.  Downey had a miserable shooting night overall though, and only one other Downey player scored in double figures, junior guardJonathanJames with 11.  Matt Henderson (6'-5" Jr. F) scored 9 and senior center James Black scored 8.  Hillcrest Christian (20-4) which upset third-seeded Buckley in the quarterfinals despite having just one player taller than 6-2, built a 57-50 lead against the No. 2 Grizzlies with 2:17 to play, and hit 9 threepointers over the course of the game, and they shot 14-15 from the line, 14 in a row before missing late in the fourth on James Habashy's attempt as Calvary trailed 63-60 with under three minutes to play.  On the next possession, James hit a free throw, to bring it to within two, 63-61.  Drisdom's back-to-back three's followed. Alex Martino led Hillcrest with 21 points, (three 3-pointers).  James Habashy, who sat out most of the last half of Hillcrest's third round game agaisnt Flintridge Prep and missed all of the Buckley game with a sprained ankle, scored 14. Amrit Nat foled out midway through the fourth quarter and the Eagles also lost Eric Hodgkins to fouls as well in the final minutes of the game.   CC Downey --Drisdom 28, Black 8, Grace 3, Grider 3, J. James 11, Henderson 9, M. James 4, Roberson 2.  GH Hillcrest--Amit Nat 2, Amrit Nat 9, Hodgkins 8, Martino 21, Habashy 14, Haddad 9.   CCD--18  12  17  21--68;   Hillcrest--21  21  17  4--63.
