Division 5A Boys bracket updated final

CIF-SS Boys V-A Championship Game:
Price Easily Downs AV Christian--(Mar. 2, 2001)

The LA Times today carried a recap of this game which stated: "Antelope Valley Christian was competitive with Price for the first half of their Southern Section Division V-A boys' basketball final. . . " Er, um, ok. Let us remind everyone though, and we don't mean to be unkind about this, but Price led by 10 at the end of the first quarter and then by 13 at the half. And then everyone started humming that stupid song, "Who let the dogs out?" The third quarter was the sort of nightmarish experience that you wouldn't wish on your worst enemy. . . well, ok, maybe your worst enemy. Price pounded the Eagles, reminding them who was the defending State Champion by scoring 37 points while holding a younger, and far less experienced, smaller and outmatched AVC team to just 7 points. By the end of the third quarter, Price had forced AVC into 27 turnovers and had stolen the ball 20 times.

By the end of the third quarter, the score was 76-33, and many of us in attendance who had been daydreaming through that nightmarish quarter started to stir, shifted uneasily in our seats, and hoped that it was really the end of the fourth quarter and there would be no further carnage. And, for the most part, Price did call off the dogs in the fourth, with Coach Michael Lynch taking out the starters (who by then were also starting to get a bit sloppy themselves, having committed 15 turnovers up to that point) and instead chose to play his younger players, calling off the smothering and effective press. In the fourth quarter, Price only outscored AVC by 5 points (21-16) and allowed the runners-up something left to take into the State Regional tournament next week (both AVC and Price will compete in that tournament starting next week against the winners and runners up from San Diego and Central Section's D-V, along with both Kilpatrick and Calvary Chapel Downey from Southern Section's V-AA, who also both get automatic bids to the State Championship Tournament.

The stats below pretty much tell the whole story of this game. Honestly, there wasn't much else to tell, as the Knights (29-3) just absolutely walloped AVC (22-7) and they did it as one might anticipate the defending State D-V champions would, decisively and with emphasis. Price was led by Cal State Fullerton-signee Chris Alexander with 24 points, 3 assists and 3 steals, while Jermaine Jamerson and Andrew Howard also hit double figures with 10 and 12 points respectively. Howard had 6 steals in the game, and as a team, Price had 21 steals to just 7 for AVC, which was led by John Cho with 17 points, Chris Yoo with 10 and Jamal Flanagan with 12.
