adidas Double Pump HS & JC
Pump Discovery Shootout--(Mar. 13, 2001)

There are two "Pump Discovery Shootouts" and this time we're not talking about the "Senior Shootout" which actually took place last wekeend at Lynwood HS.  This event will take place this weekend, March 17th & 18th at Cal State Dominguez Hills, with games going all day and into the evening, from 9:00 a.m. until 9:00 at night.  We don't have the game schedules or the rosters (yet) but we do have the list of participating teams.  Many of the teams will be either the same or similar to those that played at the "Senior" Shootout (which, strictly speaking wasn't limited to just seniors), so we've got a fair idea of who is playing.  Here's a list of what we know so far:

Pump N Run:

There will only be a single Pump N Run team entered under that name.  This team will be coached by Aubrey McCreary and will feature a short roster this weekend because two or three players are still playing for their respective high school state championships.  The team will have David Gale (6'-1" Jr. PG) from Buckley;  Brandon Worthy (6'-1" Jr. PG/SG) from San Jose; David Padgett (6'-11" So. C), probably the best young big man on the west coast; Matt McKinney (6'-8" Jr. F) from Santa Ynez;   CJ Watson (6'-2" Jr. G) from Bishop Gorman in Las Vegas; Lance Soderberg (6'-8" Jr. F) from Corona Centennial, and Brandon Rohe (6'-3" Jr. SG) from Santa Margarita.  Joining the team at the Pump Easter Tournament and for the Spiece Indiana Run-N-Slam Tournament on May 4, 5 & 6 at Purdue, will be Brad Buchman (6'-10" Jr. F/C) from Austin-Westlake HS in Texas, and Nik Caner-Medley (6'-7" Jr. F), who is rated as the No. 1 player by those who know in the State of Maine, and there's also rumors that Jerry McNamara (6'-1" Jr. PG) from Pennsylvania will join the team as well to round out an excellent squad.

Double Pump Arizona All Stars:

The Double Pump Arizona All Stars is a team coached by Jeff Meadows and Anthony Ray (who also puts out the ArizonaPreps.com Rivals website), and it will feature some of the best players in Arizona, including Brian Freeny, Nick DeWitz, Jon Wilkins, Derek Wabbington,  and many others.  Along with Elliot Glabman's teams, Arizona will be well-represented at the Pump event this weekend.

BWBA Green:

This is one of two teams that Bob Gottlieb will enter.   Last weekend this team had a lot of guys from other states and some locals too, including Gabe Perez (6'-1" Sr. G) from Calallen, Ryan Hatch (6'-1" Sr. G) from Westlake, Jared Jungwirth (6'-6" Sr. F) from Camarillo, Patrick Lefler (6'-4" Sr. G) from Capistrano Valley, Neal Smith (6'-8" Sr. F) from Ocean View, and we'd also expect to see some younger players on this squad as well.

BWBA Black:

We're not certain who you'll see, but we're betting that you'll see guys like Kyle Kegley (6'-5" Sr. SG) from Thousand Oaks, Will Smith (6'-8" Sr. F) from Midland, Tx, David Patten (6'-9" Jr. F) from El Dorado, one of the best big men in Orange County, Stanford Grandy (6'0" Prep G) from Valley Forge Prep, Chad Carter (6'-10" Jr. F) from Arlington, and several others.

1 Tough School:

This group, which is, as we understand it, a combine of Rich Prospero's teams and Tom Lewis' teams, will actually have four teams entered, and again, since we haven't seen the rosters, we just can't be certain who will show.  They weren't at the Senior Shootout last weekend, so it's anyone's guess until we get the actual rosters.

AZ Heat:

Elliott Glabman will be entering three teams,  and once again, we haven't seen the rosters so we're not sure who will be on these three teams.

CABC I & II

Harry Wilson will again be bringing two teams (last weekend they had three teams, including one of all seniors).  This team will likely have guys like Mike Reich from Chadwich, some of the unsigned seniors from Santa Margarita (e.g., Adam Tancredi, RJ Socci, CJ Hubbard, Kevin Krouse), and some others like Zach Zanolli from Aliso Niguel.  These seniors will probably be sprinkled in with some of the underclassmen who play for CABC, including guys like the Collins brothers, Lenny and Jake, Travis Smith, Hayden Socci,  and maybe even some of the younger freshmen who played on CABC 3 from last week.

H-Squad:

This is Rick Isaacs' team, and it will feature guys like Kevin Elleby from Venice at the point (who we hear is petitioning for a 5th year of eligibility), Tommy Johnson, who is once again back at Crenshaw (in the adult school) working on improving his core-GPA so he can make good on his verbal to San Diego State for next year, which if true and if he qualifies would give the Aztecs a tremendous backcourt along with Tony Bland.  We're not sure who else will be there for H-Squad, but if it's like last week, the team will also include Ronald Allen from Artesia, Ryan Reyes from Artesia, Lester Clay from Crenshaw, Ryan Meuilleur from Artesia, Marko Mihailovic from Pali, Kevin Edmonds from Fountain Valley, and others.

Jackrabbits

This will be Long Beach Poly.  Carlos Rivers, Reggie Butler, etc., ad infinitum.  You know the roster.  All excellent players who got bounced too early from the CIF I-AAA bracket this year.

No Limits:

Mostly the Victor Valley guys who aren't now playing with IEBP, it will also include players from Apple Valley and Silverado:  Jamaal Holden, Julius Day, Corey Cabrellos, Jason Collins, Joe Holly, Seve Wahi, Mike Thompson, Lofton McDonald, and DeJesus Brown, mostly all juniors with a senior or two for good luck.

Team Dada:

This is Bob Burns and Ruben Sanchez's team, and it will feature some top players, including one of the top juniors in the country in Fairfax's Evan Burns.  Ruben Sanchez (the son, from Notre Dame, not the father, who is a coach), along with Fernando Sampson,  Anthony Naylor who is now prepping at Northfield Mt. Herman (originally from Harvard-Westlake), Jasha Blunt from Fairfax, Matt Llewellyn who is now at Campbell Hall after transferring from LA Loyola about two weeks ago in mid-semester, and one of the best sophs on the West Coast, Omar Wilkes.  This team also played at the Pump event last weekend, and the roster featured Craig Smith, a senior who has signed at Boston College, and while we didn't see him there on Saturday, he might play this weekend. An excellent team.

Raiders:

We have no idea who these guys are or where they are from, but we'll find out.  Coach is Steve Trejo and they're from the 562 area code, which means somewhere in the Glendale-Pasadena region.

San Diego Cougars:

We haven't seen this team since the fall tournament at Dominguez Hills, and in fact in the fall there were two "Cougars" teams if we remember, but they had some excellent players, like Avi Fogel, Rommel Marentez, a bench loaded with guards.  It will be interesting to see who shows.  Coached by Jeff Harper.

San Leandro

No idea.  Obviously from San Leandro up in the Bay Area, but beyond the fact that Mike Menzel is the coach, that's as much as we know.

Skywalkers

A lot of good players from the Antelope Valley area, including some excellent and promising young guys like Jeremiah Nurse, Matthew Marquez, Percky Pickett, Jimmy Lynn, mostly all from Antelope Valley Christian (the team that got hammered by Price in the Section V-A Finals), and a bunch of seniors, including Sidney Melvin, who led Desert this season to the quarterfinals in V-AA, Tony Johnson from Quartz Hill, John Cho and Jamal Flanagan from AVC, and Gabe Stevenson from Highland.

South County All Stars:

A team coached by Peter McLaughlin, it features Omar Amaral, an excellent point guard from Bolsa Grande, Peter McCaslin from Chadwick, Shane Del Rosario from Dana Hills, Mike Mooney and Brad McLaughlin from Dana Hills, Drew Terry from Northwood, Ryan and Evan Moorre from Brea Olinda, and Chris Goswiller from Capo Valley.   At least it did last weekend. . . no telling who will be there this weekend.

West Valley:

Bob Bramlett will be bringing three teams from the San Jose-Santa Cruz region.  We haven't seen the rosters, so we can't say who will be playing, but we'd expect to see, at a minimum, Josh Rhodes from Santa Cruz.

JUCO Teams

One never knows who is going to show up when there's a JC tournament, but there will be at least 8 JUCO team playing against each other this weeked, including a team from Arizona, and several others from around California.

We'll have the schedules and hopefully the complete rosters up shortly.

See you there.
