SoCal Natives Doing Well
At Salisbury Prep--(Mar. 15, 2001)

From time to time we get news about some of the SoCal guys who are back east attending prep schools, and that was the case today, as we heard from Jeff Ruskin, Assistant Coach at Salisbury Prep who wrote to tell us about several local guys who are playing well in the east coast prep school leagues. "Attached is a release about three SoCal kids at Salisbury School. We enjoy your site back here on the east coast. Keep up the great work!"   Thanks Jeff.  Here's the attachment:

Salisbury, CT – Salisbury (CT) School completed its season with a 79-76 double-overtime loss to nationally ranked and first-seeded Marion (MA) Tabor Academy in the semi-finals of the New England Prep School Class B Tournament. Tabor was led by seniors 6’3" PG Jermaine Watson (Boston College), 6’7" PF David Sands (New Hampshire) and junior 6’9" C Torrin Francis. The Crimson Knights, featuring three players from the Southern California area, concluded their campaign at 19-10. Last year, Tulane’s Wayne Tinsley (Fontana, CA) led Salisbury to a 23-5 finish.

Lawrence Carrier (6’8" soph. SF) led Salisbury in scoring with 18.4 ppg. and was second in rebounding with 8.2 rpg. He missed the last nine games of the regular season with an ankle injury, but returned to score 19 against Tabor. Carrier’s best performance of the year was a 34-point, 18 rebound game against Canada’s Vanier College in a semi-final win at the Sun Youth Christmas Classic in Montreal.

Paul Roby (6’ soph. SG) overcame an early-season injury and made solid contributions as the sixth man before moving into the starting lineup when Carrier was injured. Over the last ten games, Roby averaged 20.7 ppg., including 28 against Cushing Academy in the quarter-finals and 27 against Tabor. He ended the year averaging 15.6 ppg. and shooting 42.3% on three-point shots.

Fabian Bean (6’5" jr. PF) averaged 5.0 ppg. and 4.8 rpg while being plagued throughout the season with nagging leg injuries. He is also a tight end on Salisbury’s New England Prep School Class A champion football team and is projected as a low- to mid-level Division I candidate.
