Boys' California State Championship
Playoff Brackets--(Mar. 5, 2001)

Division I   Division II   Division III   Division IV   Division V

Since the State CIF website doesn't seem to be functioning properly (at last check not all of the brackets were up as of Monday morning), we thought we'd just help everyone along.  We're running way behind on stuff, but we figured we'd get these posted before events simply overtake them.

Division I

In the NorCal regionals, there are two games taking place today, Monday March 5, and they are technically called "outbracket" games.   Jesuit will play Oakland Castlemont at Jesuit, and San Francisco Lincoln will play Bellarmine Prep of San Jose at Lincoln also at 7:30 p.m.   The rest of the games are pretty much self-explanatory. In the SoCal regionals, the games take place tomorrow night, Tuesday March 6, and in NorCal the first round is Wednesday.

In the South, Mater Dei, which won the Southern Section Division I-A title Saturday night in a 73-62 win over Corona Centennial, gets the No. 1 seed LA City Section champion Westchester is second, Fresno Clovis West is No. 3 and San Diego Torrey Pines is No 4.  Mater Dei (29-2) will host No. 8 Glendora (27-4) at a site to be announced (probably Ocean View), Westchester (28-1) will host to No. 7 Corona Centennial (28-3), No. 4 Torrey Pines (30-3) will host No. 5 Upland (31-1)  and No. 3 Clovis West (29-2) will host No. 6 Fremont (20-7)

In the second round, there are considerations like "travel priorities" and seedings which come into play in order to determine who gets the homecourt.  The team with the higher travel priority, gets to stay home, while the teams with the lower travel priority can expect to be on the road if they play a higher priority team in the second round..  Here are the seedings and travel priorities for the SoCal entrants:

Seeded Teams Travel Priority  Travel Priority
1. Mater Dei 1. Mater Dei, Santa Ana (SS) 29-2 5. Upland (SS) 31-1
2. Westchester 2. Westchester (LA) 28-1 6. Fremont, Los Angeles (LA) 20-7

Division II

In D-II, at least in the South, there were few surprises, but the seeding does seem to indicate that we'll see at least one matchup between No. 1 seed Dominguez and No. 6 Inglewood.  Dominguez plays No. 8 Ramona in the first round, and Inglewood gets No. 4 seed Hanford.  In the bottom half of the bracket, Mayfair is the No. 3 seed, but surprisingly, is on the road despite having a higher travel priority and a higher seed than Eastlake.  But both the State CIF website and the LA Times report that Mayfair is at Eastlake. . . go figure. . .Edison of Fresno, the No. 7 team will play No. 2 seed Redondo Union at Redondo tomorrow night.    Here's the bracket:

Division III

Division III is not a real surprise.  In the South, the four seeded teams are: No. 1 Bishop Montogomery (Southern Section), No. 2 St. Augustine (San Diego), No. 3 Sierra (Central), and No. 4 Compton Centennial (Southern Section).   And just like last year, Compton Centennial and Bishop Montgomery have been placed in the same half of the bracket, and it's likely that the two teams will again meet in the

Division IV

Division IV in the SoCal regional has some interesting matchups with No. 1 Garces, a team which has yet to lose a game, plays No. 8 seed St. Paul. No. 4 seed Crespi will host No. 5 Lincoln.  In the lower half of the bracket, St. Monica travels to Bishops and Lindsay will come down to play at Crossroads.

Division V

A couple of surprises here: In the South, Price got the No. 1 seed (not a surprise), and will host Central Section runner-up Mission Prep.   Calvary Chapel Downey got the No.3 seed and will host No. 7 Marian Catholic from San Diego. Immanuel from Reedley (Central Section) got the No. 2 seed and will host No. 8 Antelope Valley Christian.   The big surprise though was that Santa Fe Christian of San Diego got the No. 4 seed and will host No. 5 Kilpatrick. . . although on second thought, giving Kilpatrick, which doesn't have a home gym the No. 4 seed might have screwed things up a bit. . . In the NorCal regionals, we don't know a thing about the team, so we'll hold off on making any comments, except to say that Branson has been ranked all year, and St. Elizabeth features one player we know pretty well, Bakari Altheimer, a solid point guard who has signed with Santa Clara for next season.
