CIF D-I Boys State SoCal Regional:
First Round Scores & Details--(Mar. 7, 2001)

Division I

Mater Dei 75, Glendora 38-- Mater Dei (30-2) cruised to a fairly uneventful 75-38 win over Glendora on Tuesday in the first round of the Boy's D-I Southern Regional State playoffs in a game played at Ocean View HS and broadcast on Fox Sports. The Tartans (27-5), D-IAA section champions, were just unable to effectively compete against the Monarchs, who played without center Jamal Sampson (6'-11" Sr. C), who was injured and reportedly suffering from "bone spurs" on his right ankle.  Sampson played almost the entire game on Saturday against Corona Centennial as Mater Dei won the Southern Section D-IA championship, but was visibly limping throughout most of that game.  But on Tuesday night, the Monarchs hardly missed him at all as they held Glendora to just 25% shooting from the field, and forced 28 turnovers. Mater Dei was led by UCLA-signee Cedric Bozeman with 17 points on 8-11 shooting.  Junior small forward Mike Strawberry scored 18 points, 14 in the third quarter. Glendora center Spencer Foster was held to just three points.  Kyle Bechler was the only real bright spot for Glendora, as the shooting-combo guard had 17 points.   But he was also the only Glendora player to reach double digits.  Bechler pulled Glendora close at the half, 29-17 on consecutive three pointers, but it was as close as Glendora got. Mater Dei went on a 14-0 run to open the third quarter, with 10 of those points being scored by Strawberry. In the fourth quarter, Mater Dei finally found some time for some of the younger players:  Sophomores Trevante Nelson and Wesley Washington (who may be the most talented soph in the West who receives literally no playing time on this team) combined for some nice plays with  Nelson hitting two three-pointers and Washington making a thunderous dunk.  Glendora--Bechler 17, Monroe 7, Mehanna 3, Foster 3, Jackwon 3, Onaka 3, Bryan 1, Briggs 1.  Mater Dei--Strawberry 18, Bozeman 17, Porter 12, Schaen 8, Delgado 6, Nelson 6, Michel 3, Washington 3, Brown 2.   Glendora--6  11  9  12--38;  Mater Dei --12  17  22   24--75.  Three-point goals:  Glendora 6 (Bechker 5, Onaka 1); Mater Dei 3 (Nelson 2, Porter 1).  Fouled out: None.  Technicals: None.  Records: Glendora (27-5), Mater Dei (30-2).

Upland 80, Torrey Pines 67-- The Division IAAA Southern Section champion Highlanders, ranked No. 12 in the nation by USA Today, dealt Torrey Pines its worst loss of the season, 80-67, in the first round of the Division I SoCal State Regional tournament.  Upland (32-1), the same team that beat Compton Dominguez by 30 in December at the BCW Tournament  was led by Kirk Snyder with 20 points. Torrey Pines, the San Diego Section champion finishes the season at 30-4.  Upland led 39-34 at the half, and midway through the third, with the score 43-37, Upland went on a 15-4 run to take a 58-43 lead at the end of three. Upland forced 9 turnovers in the third quarter alone. Upland had four players score in double figures:   Snyder with 20, Jason Harris with a game-high 22, Sheldon Pace with 18 and Jesse Pruitt with 15. For Torrey Pines, Ryan Neff scored 17 and Josh Kramer had 11.  UPLAND (80) Pace 18, Pruitt 15, J. Harris 22, P. Harris 3, Snyder 20, Davis 2. TORREY PINES (67) Feramisco 7, Cech 5, Neff 17, Brull 19, Kramer 11, Weeks 4, Fogel 4. Upland 22 17 19 22 -- 80 Torrey Pines 16 18 9 24 -- 67 Total fouls: U 18, TP 16. Fouled out: none. Technical fouls: none.

Clovis West 78, Fremont 70--Clovis West's Chris Hernandez hit seven free throws in the final 1:46 to win the first round State Southern Regional game against LA Fremont.  Hernandez shot 7-8 from the line during that time, and scored 9 of his 22 points in the fourth quarter.  No. 6 Fremont ends the season as the LA City Section runner up, while Clovis West picked up it's 16th straight win. In the first quarter, Fremont was shooting the lights out, hitting four threes in the period, and then they scored the first 8 points to start the second quarter, taking at 28-22 lead. But eventually, Clovis West's shooting was equally on target.  After Fremont took a 30-23 lead with 6:10 remaining in the first half, Clovis then woke up and went on a 19-2 run, taking a lead of 10 just before the half,  42-32. But Fremont then scored the next 6 points in the quarter, trimming the half-time lead to 42-38.  In the third, Fremont opened up with the first 6 points as well, regaining the lead at 44-42.  The lead switched hands two more times, but then Clovis went ahead for good, 48-46, and Fremont never regained the lead.  In the fourth quarter, Fremont again closed to within 4,  when the scor was 66-62 following a three pointer by Fremont's Eatmon with 4:30 to play, and then again pulled to within 5 at 69-64 when Mark Bradford scored with 3:20, but that was as close as it got.  Fremont scored again, but Clovis was helped by a basket from Nick Debban and then Hernandez hit 5 of 6 from the line to finish it off.   For Clovis West Tyrone Jackson scored 17 points, including two 3's (8 in the last minute of the third and the last 8 minute fourth quarter), and Nick Debban had 17.   Hernandez' 22 points were also a game-high, and Clovis guard Danny Parker also hit for 14 points, including 4 three pointers of his own.  Fremont's Eatmon scored a team-high 18 points, hitting six 3-pointers, and Kenton Paulino had 15 and Sanford 13.   The Pathfinders hit 11 three pointers in the game.

Corona Centennial 89, Westchester 87 (OT)-- Westchester wasn't supposed to lose. . . not to a team that had been beaten by Mater Dei, especially since Westchester was supposed to beat the Monarchs in their eventual matchup. . . But that matchup will have to wait for next year, as the Comets were suprised and upended by a remarkable Corona Centennial (29-3) squad, which was led in scoring by New Mexico-bound senior Jamal William's 30 points.   Westchester (28-2) was leading by five with 9.9 seconds left to play in regulation, but behind some clutch play from Centennial's senior point guard David Sybesma, who finished with 18 points and some excellent defensive rebounding from junior Lance Soderberg, the Huskies forced the overtime.  Brandon Heath had given Westchester a 5 point lead, 73-68 by hitting two free throws with 9.9 to play.  But with then David Sybesma brought the ball upcourt and with just 5.5 seconds to play, Sybesma hit a three pointer to cut the lead to two.   Centennial then immediately fouled senior Chad Bell, who went to the line and missed both.  On the second miss, Lance Soderberg grabbed the ball and was fouled by Hassan Adams, his 5th foul.  Soderberg went to the line, made both free throws with 4.9 seconds to play, and the game went to overtime.   Westchester was hampered in the overtime by the loss of Adams, who finished with 18 in regulation, and Keith Everage who also fouled out, finishing the night with 15 points.  Sophomore forward Trevor Ariza was also out for most of the game, having sustained an ankle injury in the first quarter.  CENTENNIAL (89) -- Lance Soderberg 14, David Sybesma 18, Brian Gonzales 9, J.R. Reese 10, Jamaal Williams 30, Bryan Williams 8. WESTCHESTER (86) -- Brandon Heath 25, Scott Cutley 10, David Warsaw 2, John Clemmons 2, Ashanti Cook 4, Hassan Adams 18, Brandon Bowman 5, Chad Bell 5,  Keith Everage 15. Halftime score -- Westchester 33-26. Regulation score -- 73-73. Three-point goals -- Sybesma 2, Reese 2, Heath 2. Total fouls -- Centennial 27, Westchester 29. Fouled out -- J.Williams, Adams, Everage.  Records: Centennial 29-3, Westchester 28-2.
