CIF D-III Boys State SoCal Regional:
First Round Scores & Details--(Mar. 7, 2001)

Division III

Bishop Montgomery 82, Valley Center 33-- If ever there was a team capable of putting an opponent through 32 minutes of hell, it's Bishop Montgomery.  On Tuesday night, Valley Center met their own version of Friday the 13th as the Bishop Montgomery Knights easily handled the visitors.  Errick Craven scored 21 points and grabbed six rebounds as Bishop Montgomery blew out Valley Center in the first round of the Division III Southern California Regional playoffs on Tuesday night.  The Knights (27-2) just pounded Valley Center (16-14), starting off with a 9-0 run and they led by 12 after the first quarter.  The next three quarters was just more of the same, with alley-oops and dunks, slick passing and tenacious and smothering defense.  In the second quarter, Valley Center scored just 6 points.  Bishop Montgomery committed only 13 turnovers and forced 22 turnovers.  DeVaughn Peace scored 12 points, as did Leland Dodd, while Fred Washington added 11 and 4 steals and 3 blocked shots. The Knights will host Compton Centennial Thursday, and for the second year in a row (can you say deja vu'?) these two teams will once again meet in the State Regional semifinals at Bishop Montgomery, and in the Southern Section finals.  So far in the series, Bishop Montgomery holds a 3-0 edge.

Compton Centennial 72, Washington Union 50-- Anthony Davis (6'-5" Sr. SG/SF), who has signed with Long Beach State, scored 27 points to lead the Apaches to the win over visiting Washington Union (18-9).  Davis shot 12-18 from the field, but only hit one of 9 three point attempts. The Apaches were also led by Antonio Griffin who finished with 14 p;oints and 8 boards, and by point guard Roscoe Biggers, who had 5 points, 9 assists, 6 rebounds and 3 steals.    Centennial didn't play a completely flawless game though, committing 20 turnovers;  however the Panthers committed 23 themselves, and this is definitely not the Washington Union squad of two years ago. . . Washington Union was led by Marvin Carraway with 17 points and three steals.  Maruice Shaw finished with 11 rebounds.    Centennial never trailed and opened up an 11-4 lead on Tim Eli's layup off a Biggers' assist. The Apaches extended their lead to as much as 33-20 in the first half on freshman Gabriel Pruitt's 3-pointer. The Panthers pulled within 37-34 with 2 minutes, 30 seconds left in the third quarter. But the Apaches responded with a 13-1 run to end the quarter

San Dimas 67, Sierra 60-- Most people don't know where Sierra is, and most have never heard of "Tollhouse, California" but besides being the name of a particular kind of chocolate-chip cookie, Tollhouse is also the location of Sierra High School.  And it's also the last time this season that you'll hear anyone from SoCal mention that fact because on Tuesday, the San Dimas Saints ended the 2000-2001 season for the Sierra Chieftains.  Oh, and as today's edition of the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin also notes, Tollhouse is a six hour bus ride away from San Dimas. . . one way.  San Dimas struggled to shake the Chieftains until a 16-4 second-half run - including back-to-back 3-pointers at the end of the third quarter by Ruckels - built a 64-49 lead with 3:25 left.  But the Saints failed to hit a field goal from that point on, committing four turnovers in that final stretch.  The Saints (26-4) made the win tougher than they needed to, letting their lead slip away late in the fourth. The Chieftains (30-3), the Central Section Division III Champion, finished the game with the 11-3 run.  With just 1:36 to play, Sierra hit three consecutive baskets to pull to within 9, 64-55, but Aaron Wellmen missed two free throws with 1:36 left. Greenlee then missed two of his own free throws, and Sierra's Jordan Foster - who scored all 12 of his points on 3-pointers - hit a 27-footer to pull Sierra to within six points.   San Dimas turned the ball over, but then Sierra's Daniel Ching was called for an intentional foul with only 27 seconds remaining and Jason Greenlee went to the line, hit one of two, but San Dimas got possession.  Senior guard Jason Greenlee scored 23 points, and Dreww Ruckels added 10 second-half points off the bench.  Jason Greenlee had 19 points in the first half, but shot only 2-of-7 in the second half. SAN DIMAS (67) Greenwade 9, Greenlee 23, Small 7, Ferrera 10, Mesrobian 8, Ruckels 10. SIERRA (60) Bretz 6, Heeren 20, Reeves 10, Cogburn 2, Rose 4, Trimble 6, Foster 12. San Dimas 17 14 19 17 --   67 Sierra 15 13 16 16 -- 60 Total fouls: SD 20, S 18. Fouled out: none. Technical fouls: none.

St. Augustine 72, Sherman Oaks Notre Dame 70-- According to Steve Brand in the San Diego Union Tribune, "Floyd North has scored 2,000 points in his high school career, but none bigger than the last two he got on a 15-foot jump shot with one second to play last night, capping one of the most remarkable comebacks in St. Augustine High history."  Down by 15 points in the third quarter, and 10 with just two minutes to play, St. Augustine (22-6) went on a run, capped by North's remarkable buzzer-beater, to win the first round game on Tuesday night over Notre Dame at St. Augustine.  Notre Dame's Cody Pearson, who matched North's game-high 30 points, played a remarkable last high school game, and Mike Luderer added 20 for the Knights, but it wasn't enough to overcome North's last second heroics.  Despite taking what seemed like a commanding lead on a 14-0 run midway through the third, including hitting four three-pointers, Notre Dame faltered when it mattered most, at the end, and in the last two minutes St. Augustine just managed to control offensively and defensively. .   Utah-bound Eric Osmundson finished with 20 points, and he also started the Saint's comeback, hitting two free throws and then a three-pointer to pull St. Augustine to within 5, 70-65 with just a little more than a minute to play.  Notre Dame tried to stall, but Rommel Marentez stole the ball, hit the layup and drew the and-one, hitting the extra point to bring the score to within 2 points. Osmundson then tied the game on an inbounds play, and when Notre Dame tried to inbound the ball with just four seconds showing, they were called for a five-second violation, turning the ball over.  North got the ball, and managed to get the shot off at the buzzer for the win. St. Augustine will play San Dimas in the second round semifinal on Thursday at Rancho Bernardo High School. Notre Dame--Smith 9, Sanchez 2, Luderer 21, Pearson 29, Hungerford 2, Johnson 7.  St. Aug--Marentez 8, North 30, Osmundson 28, Mauger 6.  ND--15   19  22  14--70;  St. Aug- 14  19  15  21--72.   Notre Dame 23-7; St. Augustine 22-6.
