CIF D-IV Boys State SoCal Regional:
First Round Scores & Details--(Mar. 7, 2001)
Division IV
Garces 74, St. Paul 41-- Garces remained as the State's only undefeated team, improving to 29-0 with the first round win in the State Division IV SoCal regional tournament over visiting St. Paul (18-14). Garces was led by Anthony Esparza, who hit five of seven three pointers and also made made 11 of 14 free throws, finishing with 30 points, while sophomore Kyle Shiloh added 14 points on 2-for-4 shooting from 3-point range. Garces also got 11 points from Kyle Villalovos, who shot three for five from three point range. St. Paul came out sloppy, turning the ball over on its first three possessions. The Swordsmen turned the ball over 8 times in the first quarrter, 28 times in the game. Fausto Gonzalez was again a bright spot though for St. Paul, and the senior forward scored 16 points on the night. Garces advances to the State Division IV quarterfinals and will host Encino-Crespi (24-6) Thursday night at 7:30. Crespi knocked off San Diego-Lincoln Academy 74-63 Tuesday. The game will either be played at Garces or Bakersfield Centennial, depending on the size of the crowd. This was a game which was marred by fouls, including several technicals, largely stemming from Garces' full-court pressure defense. St. Paul's coach was given a technical and then one minute into the second half, Rudy Serna was called for shoving a Garces player after the whistle had blown; a minute later, St. Paul's Omar Cepeida was called for a "T" and then Raymond Cagigas also was called for a technical. Finally, in the fourth quarter Dontay Holloway got a technical of his own, the team's fifth.
Crespi 74, Lincoln 63-- Shaun Davis, a 5'-9" So. point guard from Lincoln was the only reason that the visiting squad from San Diego managed to hang around as long as they did. Scoring 33 points on a variety of long-bomb three pointers and running floaters in the lane, Davis continually kept bringing the Hornets back from near extinction. But it was the combined play of Crespi's starters, including Kingley Anyanwu who scored 28 pointes and 16 rebounds, together with Andrew Moore's 16 points, seven of those points from the line in the final minutes of the game on 7-8 free throw shooting. Crespi led, 28-26, at halftime despite making only 11 of 31 shots. Crespi went on an 8-0 run midway through the third quarter to take a 40-30 lead. Lincoln got withing three, 51-48 with about 4 minutes to play, but Crespi started to use the clock judiciously, as Moore repeatedly had to tell other teammates to slow down and not get into a running game with Lincoln, which was just what Lincoln tried to do, applying a full court press defense in the fourth which largely didn't work, and only resulted in a series of fouls which allowed Crespi to score 30 points in the fourth quarter, 20 of them at the line on 20-23 shooting. Paul Angel had some key scoring as well, finishing with 14 points, but it was Davis, the diminutive point guard who kept Lincoln in the game, including hitting back-to-back threes in the final minute of the game to allow Lincoln to pull to within 5 points with just 40 seconds remaining, 68-63. Scoring: Shaun Davis 33, Vance 4, McGuire 5, Shoate 4, Deshoteles 4, Harris 2, Webster 5, Thomptons 1, Payne 3, Smith 2. Crespi--Andrew Moore 16, Allan Ellis 7, Kingsley Anywanu 28 and 16 rebounds, Dinoi Fekaris 2, Paul Angel 14, Derrick O'Dwyer 5, Roopenian 2. Lincoln--10 16 12 25--63; Crespi 16 12 16 30--74. Records: Lincoln 21-9; Crespi 24-6.
St. Monica 69, Bishop's 65 (OT)--Marcus Shelby scored 23 points and Sean Cole added 17 for Santa Monica St. Monica (22-8). Jamayne Potts (13 points) hit a 25-foot three-point shot at the buzzer to force overtime, and the Mariners went on to outscore the Knights 10-5 in the extra period. Martin Smith had 18 points for the Knights (26-5).
Crossroads 47, Lindsay 43-- We couldn't find any details on this game except for a couple of one-liners in the Fresno Bee's online edition: "For the second straight season, Lindsay came to a crossroads that led to elimination from the playoffs. Isaiah Fox, a 6-foot-10, 250-pounder, scored 20 points as Crossroads (Santa Monica) beat the visiting Cardinals 47-43 in the first round. "The game was definitely played above the rim," Lindsay coach Don Perales said. Crossroads blew out Lindsay by 20 points in last year's final." Crossroads will host cross-town rival St. Monica on Thursday in the Division IV semifinal.
