Cal-Hi Sports' 2001 Boys' Final
State & Regional Rankings--(Mar. 19, 2001)

Cal-Hi Sports does a weekly State and Regional ranking of high school teams throughout the season.   We've been fortunate to have developed a working relationship with them, and we've featured their polls, together with a link to their site in our "recruiting" section (although if the truth be told, they don't actually have much in the way of what most folks think of as "recruiting" news. . .but that's a different story.   Frankly, we just couldn't think of another place for the link.).

In any event, it's time for the final rankings by Cal-Hi Sports.  We'll be doing our own final polls shortly, and we'll be posting up our "All SoCalHoops" player lists for the Southern and City Sections  (these are not to be confused with the official All-CIF lists for the Southern Section which will be prepared and posted by the Southern Section through SCIBCA, or with the official "All-City Section" lists which will also come out shortly from the City Section's office).

In any event, here's Cal-Hi's article with the final rankings, and not surprisingly, Mater Dei comes out on top as the No. 1 team in the State.   And why not?  They're the State D-I champions and they've beaten just about everyone who really counts in California.  The rest of the poll is interesting, and for the Regional and Division polls, they've expanded the field going 15 teams deep in each division (a great idea we might add).

Here are the Final State rankings:

Boys Basketball State Rankings

MATER DEI STATE TEAM OF THE YEAR

You might think itıs automatic that the CIF Div. I state champion is also considered the CalHiSports.com State Team of the Year. Not true. In fact, four of the last five State Team of the Year selections went to either the Div. II or Div. III state champ.

Mater Dei of Santa Ana, which won the Div. I state crown last Saturday night at ARCO Arena in Sacramento with a 57-54 victory over Modesto Christian, is the State Team of the Year. Itıs also arguable that the 2001 edition of the Monarchs, with its deep bench and high profile players like Cedric Bozeman and Jamal Sampson, could be the schoolıs best ever.

Coach Gary McKnight had a hard time deciding the answer to that one at the postgame press conference on Saturday since the 1995 Monarchs went 35-1 in winning their state title and lost their only game by one basket to Jerry Stackhouse-led Oak Hill Academy. That team, though, needed overtime to win its state title.

The Monarchs break a two-year run by Dominguez of Compton, which also was talented enough this season to make it three in a row. But the Dons, who were sensational in out-of-state matchups against highly-ranked foes, struggled in losses to in-state teams Clovis West, Upland and De La Salle. Dominguez, which also was State Team of the Year for the 1995-96 season, won its third straight Div. II state title last Friday with a 71-53 triumph over St. Francis of Mountain View.

Bishop Montgomery of Torrance, the Div. III state champ for the second straight year, would have had a stronger chance at being State Team of the Year if Corona Centennial (a team the Knights beat) had done better after it upset Westchester in the Southern California Div. I playoffs. In 1997, a Div. III team, Harvard-Westlake of North Hollywood, was named State Team of the Year. The Wolverines were led by current Stanford standouts Jason and Jarron Collins.

Northern California has only had four State Team of the Year selections since 1970 and two of those were for 1991-92 when St. Joseph of Alameda was led by the legendary Jason Kidd.

Ratings Notes & Highlights
Modesto Christian had the stateıs last undefeated team in 1997 when the Crusaders finished 33-0 and won the Div. V state championship. The only other unbeaten teams in the state since 1990 have been Palo Alto (31-0 in 1993) and Santa Clara of Oxnard (28-0 in 1990).........The stateıs last undefeated team that also was considered State Team of the Year was Crenshaw of Los Angeles in 1985. The Cougars were 24-0 that year and won the CIF Div. I state title. That season, however, also saw the Southern Section skip the state playoffs. Mater Dei (29-0) and Glendale (28-0) also were unbeaten and many Monarch fans thought their team should have been No. 1 ahead of Crenshaw........Bishop OıDowdıs 25 wins gives the Dragons at least 20 wins for 24 consecutive seasons, an all-time state best. Mike Phelps has been at the helm for a majority of those seasons and next year is on track to win the 800th game of his career, which started in 1971 at St. Joseph of Alameda........Mater Deiıs Gary McKnight has a chance to reach 600 career wins next season. McKnightıs first season with the Monarchs was in 1983..........
