Another One Gone: David Bollwinkel
Resigns At St. Mary's--(Apr. 3, 2001)

With "March Madness" overshadowing just about everything last week, it was a little hard to focus on anything besides the teams playing in the Final Four.  But now it's time to catch up and since we're on the subject of coaching changes in the West Coast Conference, we came across another press release from last week concerning another vacancy which will affect quite a few West Coast players who were being recruited by St. Mary's.  Specifically, St. Mary's has now made it official by accepting the resignation of Gaels' coach David Bollwinkel last week.   Here's the official press release announcing the resignation. 

Saint Mary's Announces Resignation of Men's Basketball Coach 

Moraga, CA - Brother Craig J. Franz, FSC, Ph.D., announced today [March 20, 2001] that Saint Mary's College of California has accepted David Bollwinkel's resignation as the head coach for men's basketball effective as of March 12, 2001. Dave Bollwinkel indicates "it has been a wonderful experience representing the College as its men's basketball coach" and "wishes the players and his successor all the best in achieving their goals." Brother Craig stated "Saint Mary's wishes Mr. Bollwinkel well in all his future endeavors and will begin its search for a new men's basketball coach immediately."

"I am announcing my resignation as the men's basketball coach effective March 12, 2001," stated Bollwinkel. "I want to thank Saint Mary's College for the opportunuity it afforded me to serve as the head men's basketball coach. I am appreciative of the support and assistance of scores of men and women throughout the campus community. It has been a wonderful experience representing Saint Mary's College as its men's basketball coach."

Bollwinkel also stated, "I especially want to thank the wonderful student-athletes with whom it was my priviledge to work. Through this workinig relationship, I have forged many lifelong friendships.  I am disappointed that we did not achieve all we set out to accomplish and I wish the players and my successor all the best in achieving their goals. God is a Gael."
