Correction: Reggie Borges Signs
With Oral Roberts U.--(Apr. 18, 2001)

Last night we wrote that Reggie Borges (6'-7" So. JUCO F) had been reported to have signed and/or committed to Sacramento State.  We relied on information contained in a story at ESPN.com written by Bill Hodge.   Well, evidently that source was incorrect, and one of our readers who frequents a great JUCO site, Big Apple Sports, posted information to the effect that Borges had instead signed with Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma.  We didn't have time earlier to check out the veracity of the story, but we did glance at the official ORU website, which is hosted by Rivals.com.  The official site had no information about Borges, and it also didn't look as if it had been updated in days with anything besides baseball info (which may have more to do with the Rivals.com situation than anything else).

But as our friend at Big Apple Sports indicated, the Tulsa World, the local paper in Tulsa in fact carried a story which confirms the signing by ORU, and evidently it happened last week, so Hodges info is really out of date and incorrect.  Thanks to our friend from Big Apple Sports, and our apologies to Borges and ORU.   Here's the story:

ORU signs 6-7 forward

Borges averaged 23 points, 10 rebounds last season at Los Angeles Harbor College, fills scholarship roster.

Oral Roberts University completed its scholarship roster on Friday by signing combo forward Reggie Borges of Lemoore, Calif.

Borges, a 6-foot-7, 225-pound sophomore last season at Los Angeles Harbor College, averaged 23 points and 10 rebounds per game, said ORU coach Scott Sutton.

As a freshman Borges played at Fresno City College in Fresno, Calif., where he averaged 14 points and 10 rebounds per game.

"Reggie gives us another athlete who has the ability to score inside and out," Sutton said in a press release.  "We're excited he has decided to be a part of our program."

FCC's record was 31-4 while Borges was there, including 11-3 in the Central Valley Conference. LAHC, however, was only 6-23 last season (0-10 in the South Coast College Conference) and lost its last 14 games.

Borges rounds out the addition of three players for ORU. Richie Myers, who played at Northern Oklahoma College and at Edmond North High School, signed on Wednesday. Joe Cummings, who played at Westark Community College and Pocola High School, signed in November.

All three players are athletic forwards, addressing the Golden Eagles' greatest need from last season's 10-19 team.

Of its top eight players last year, ORU returns six, including four guards and two centers. That put a premium on the forward position, where the Golden Eagles struggled against more athletic teams.

"The guys we got, we won't be hurting at the power forward position," said assistant coach Corey Williams. "We're going to be tough. With Joe playing the 3 and 4 and Reggie and Richie, we're going to be OK."
