Cecil Brown Signing With
UCSB Makes It Official--(April 21, 2001)

Last week we reported that Cecil Brown (6'-4" Sr. F) from Canoga Park had signed with UCSB, but that there had been no official confirmation from the school, but that was only a temporary thing.  We saw Cecil on Friday night ripping it up and shooting the ball really well in the Rockfish All Star Games at LACC.   We didn't keep stats, but Cecil was pulling the trigger from all over the court and rarely missing. He's got a smooth jumper, great quickness and excellent size for a guard, and to top it off, he's really excited to be going to Santa Barbara.  "I'm looking forward to getting some time as a freshman.  The coaches tell me that I will be able to play the two or three spots and with all the guards at Santa Barbara, that they'll probably have some type of three-guard sets which will, hopefully, include me,"  Cecil told us on Friday. "I'm really happy to have signed at Santa Barbara. They have an excellent team and great coaches."   Here's the official press release announcing the signing:

Men's Basketball Signs High-Scoring Canoga Park Guard Cecil Brown To National Letter Of Intent
L.A. City Section leading scorer at 34.5 points per game, will join deep Gaucho backcourt in 2001-02.

April 19, 2001

Santa Barbara, Calif. - Cecil Brown, a 6-foot-4, 185 pound guard from Canoga Park High School, has signed a National Letter of Intent to play basketball at UC Santa Barbara, head coach Bob Williams announced today.

"Cecil Brown is a perfect recruit for UC Santa Barbara," commented Williams. "The combination of what he brings to UCSB academically, athletically, and as a person, is absolutely ideal. We could not have gotten a more perfect fit."

Brown had a tremendous senior campaign for Canoga Park, who he helped lead to an overall record of 14-12, a league mark of 7-3 and a spot the Los Angeles City Section playoffs. He led the L.A. City Section in scoring at 34.5 points. In addition, Brown chipped in 13.3 rebounds, 5.1 assists and 3.1 steals per game. He had a pair of 50 point games, going for a career-high 53 against Edison High School of Fresno, and 51 against Hollywood High School. He was named Sunset Six League Player of the Year, First Team All-Los Angeles, City, First Team All-Area, First Team All-San Fernando Valley and First Team All-Sunset Six League. He was also named MVP of the San Diego Torrey Pines Tournament.

"Cecil is an extremely explosive scoring threat," Williams began. "He can hurt you inside and out. We think he has tremendous up-side in his career and we are very, very excited about the opportunity to coach him and see his progress."

Brown joins a Gaucho team that returns all five starters and eight of its top-ten players from the 2000-01 squad. In addition, UCSB will return 6-foot-9 senior Adama Ndiaye, the team's starter in the post in 1999-2000, who redshirted last season after fracturing the ring finger on his left hand.

Williams and his staff signed two post players in the early signing period. The Gauchos inked 6-foot-10, 220 pound Scott Rainey, a senior at Astoria High School in Astoria, Oregon, and 6-foot-8, 230 pound Bryan Whitehead, who attended, but did not play at, Butte Junior College in Northern California. Whitehead, however, played his freshman season at Washington State and will be a sophomore next year at UCSB.
