Belmont Shore Makes It To Final Of
Houston's "Kingwood Classic"--(Apr. 30, 2001)
We heard from Dinos Trigonis late last night (or actually very early this morning) following Belmont Shore's return from the Kingwood Classic in Houston, Texas, and the news was pretty good, considering that both Belmont Shore and SCA had each lost their two pool play games (see the pool assignments below--there were just two games played in each pool). Evidently, Belmont Shore turned things around quickly, making it all the way to the Championship game, losing in overtime and they also handily beat SCA in the process. Here's Dinos' note about what happened:
Belmont Shore Rallies To Final of 2001 Kingwood TX Classic:
Loses in OT to Kentucky Stars in Championship Game
(April 29, 2000)
Belmont Shore led by 6'4" junior Hassan Adams (Los Angeles Westchester) and 6'8" sophomore Harrison Schaen (Santa Ana Mater Dei) rebounded from pool play losses to Houston Hoops (anchored by 6'10" super soph Kendrick Perkins) and Shreveport Bossier Select and rallied to win three Sunday playoff games before losing in OT (78-69) in the championship game to the Kentucky Stars.
It its Sunday playoff run, Belmont Shore knocked off the Houston Hardballers (87-75) in the 1st round, Southern California All-Stars (101-81) in the quarter-finals, Team Texasi (led by Top 25 national junior prospects Bryan Hopkins and Bracey Wright) n the semi-finals (88-78) before facing Kentucky Stars featuring 6'4" junior Michael Bush in the championship game.In the final, Belmont Shore led at half-time and most of the 2nd half before a last second Kentucky Stars' three-point shot forced an overtime period where the KY Stars used to its bench depth to overpower an 8 man Belmont Shore squad which was playing its 4th game of the day. Other top teams participating in this event were the Georgia Stars, Houston Select, Dallas Dirty Dozen, Houston Gold, Houston Lynx and KYBA Select.
Adams was superb on Sunday, scoring 22 points versus Houston Hardballers, 26 points against the Southern Cal All-Stars, 23 vs. Team Texas and 21 against the KY Stars. Also playing well for Belmont Shore was its four sophomores: 6'8" Harrison Schaen, 6'3" Wesley Washington (Santa Ana Mater Dei), 6'8" Trevor Ariza (Los Angeles Westchester) and 6'1" Marcus Williams (Los Angeles Crenshaw). Joining Adams as juniors on this team were 6'7" Marcedes Lewis (Long Beach Poly/committed to UCLA for both football and basketball), 6'6" Tony Melum (Newport Harbor) and 5'10" Carlos Rivers (Long Beach Poly). Two Belmont Shore players did not make the trip: 6'1" junior Patrick Haddan (Irvine Woodbridge/school related reasons) and 6'7" sophomore Jamaal Walls (prep school TBA/illness).
