San Diego State Announces First Basketball Signee for 2001-02 Season

The 6-8 forward becomes first member of Steve Fisher's third recruiting class.

April 12, 2001

SAN DIEGO - San Diego State head coach Steve Fisher announced that Trimaine Davis, a 6-8, 215-pound forward from Bay Point, Calif., has signed a national letter of intent to enroll at San Diego State University and play basketball for the Aztecs next season.

Davis, who chose San Diego State over Arizona State, Kansas State and Washington State, averaged 20.6 points, 14.7 rebounds and 5.7 blocks for Pittsburg High last season as a senior. The forward was named most valuable player of the Bay Valley Athletic League and earned first-team honors on the San Francisco Chronicle all-metro boys squad this past season. He led his team to a 24-2 regular-season record and a co-Bay Valley Athletic League championship.

"Trimaine is a strong forward who is very athletic," Fisher said. "We believe he is one of the top high school players in California. He is a very enjoyable young man off the court who plays with tremendous effort on the court.

"A strong post player, Trimaine gets off the floor extremely fast and has the ability, not only to get to the basket, but to finish. He has the ability to put the ball on the court and plays with tremendous enthusiasm."

San Diego State finished the 2000-01 season at 14-14, marking just the second .500 or better record for the Aztecs in the last 16 seasons. In Fisher's second season at San Diego State, the Aztecs were one of the five most improved teams in the country, according to the Sagarin Ratings and enjoyed a 73.3 percent attendance increase over the 1999-2000 campaign.

Steve Fisher's first full recruiting class at San Diego State in 1999-2000, was rated as one of the 40 classes nationally and featured the The Sporting News Mountain West Conference Newcomer of the Year and United States Basketball Writers Association District 9 member Randy Holcomb.

San Diego State returns eight of its top nine scorers for the 2001-02 season. The signing period continues through May 15.
