More: Jake Wessel--(April 17, 2001)

We've never seen Jake Wessel and don't know much about him other than what we learned from the latest press release issued by UC Riverside, which was sent to us today by Ross French, the Director of Athletic Media Relations at UCR.   Here it is:

UC Riverside Highlanders Menıs Basketball Signs
Jake Wessel of Indian Hills CC to National Letter of Intent

The UC Riverside menıs basketball team announced the signing of its fourth recruit of 2001, as 6-4 guard Jake Wessel out of Indian Hills College in Ottumwa, Iowa signed a National Letter of Intent Tuesday. Wessel, a native of Swisher, IA, averaged 12.5 points and three assists per game for the Warriors as he helped them to a 32-5 record and a fourth place finish at the National Junior College Championships in 2001. He played for Western Illinois College in 1998-99 and redshirted in 1999-00 before transferring to IHCC.

"Jake is an extremely good shooter," UCR Head Coach John Masi said. "He has excellent range and can play either wing position. He is another player who comes from a winning program."

Wessel's brother Jeff plays at the University of Arizona. Previously the Highlanders announced the signings of 6-7 forward John Galbreath of Big Bend Community College, 6-7 swingman Cedric Lusk who played for Cerritos College's 2000 state JC championship team before taking a year off to concentrate on academics, and Rickey Porter, a 6-3 combo guard who averaged 12.3 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.1 assists at Mater Dei HS. Lusk committed in the Fall signing period , while the other three have signed in the last week.

UCR finished at 8-17 overall last season as the Highlanders played their first-ever schedule against Division I opponents. The Highlanders will join the Big West Conference for the 2001-02 school year.
