John R. Wooden Award HS & College
All-Americans Announced--(April 2, 2001)

The John R. Wooden Award isn't just for college players; many people don't know it but the Wooden Award also honors the top SoCal high school players as well.  Last week, along with the release of the Wooden Award's All-American College players, the Wooden Award folks also announced the names of six Southern California high school players who will be honored as the "Wooden Award SoCal High School All-Star" winners. They are:

CIF-SS D-I   Cedric Bozeman   6'-5" Sr. G   Mater Dei,
CIF-SS D-II   Tyson Chandler   7'-0" Sr. C   Compton Dominguez,
CIF-SS D-III   Errick Craven   6'-2" Sr. G   Torrance Bishop Montgomery
CIF-SS D-IV   Isaiah Fox   6'-9" Sr. F   Santa MonicaCrossroads
CIF-SS D-V   Tim Drisdom   6'-4" Jr. G   Calvary Chapel Downey
CIF-LA City   Kenton Paulino   6'-3" Sr. G   Fremont

These six players, along with their coaches will be honored April 6 at the annual John Wooden Award dinner at the Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles. Each of these players will be recognized for outstanding play during the last season and they'll receive their respective awards at a ceremony which will precede the annual dinner at which the college Wooden Award winner will be announced.  Oh, and in case you were wondering who the college players are who remain in the running to receive the top honor in college hoops, here's the Wooden Award All-American College team for 2001:

Shane Battier   6'8" Sr. F   Duke
Charlie Bell   6'3" Sr. G   Michigan State
Casey Calvary   6'8" Sr. F   Gonzaga
Jarron Collins   6'11" Sr. F   Stanford
Joseph Forte   6'4" So. G   North Carolina
Casey Jacobsen   6'6" So. G/F   Stanford
Troy Murphy   6'11" Jr. F   Notre Dame
Tayshaun Prince   6'9" Jr. G/F   Kentucky
Frank Williams   6'3" So. G   Illinois
Jason Williams   6'2" So. G   Duke

Only one of the guys above will be named the College Player of the Year (wanna bet that the winner's initials are "SB"?), and we're pleased to see at least three of the players are originally SoCal guys (Jarron Collins of   Harvard-Westlake, Casey Jacobsen of Glendora, and Tayshaun Prince of Compton Dominguez ).

For additional details about the awards dinner you can check out the article we posted earlier in March  or you can visit the official John R. Wooden Award website.  For ticket information for the April 6 banquet, call (213) 630-5255.
