Battle Of The Valley:
More On The VSF--(May 13, 2001)

While the "Battle of the Valley All-Star Game" has gotten it's fair amount of press over the five short years it's been around, not many people know about the folks who put the event on:  The Valley Sports Foundation.

The Valley Sports Foundation was originally founded by Investment Development Services and Mike Siam, a former player at Cleveland HS who also coached there (Bobby Braswell was one of his players, and we all know that Bobby eventually went on himself to coach at Cleveland and is now the head coach at Cal State Northridge.)  Investment Development Services was looking for a non-profit vehicle to raise money to beiefit student-athletes, coaches and schools in the of the Greater San Fernando Valley. Their year-round programming now includes sports leagues, tournaments, clinics, and other opportunities for local young athletes.

In addition to the all-star games which are the "Battle of the Valley" the VSF also sponsored a banquet honoring the Valley's finest senior basketball players, their coaches and parents. But the primary fundraiser is the "Battle of the Valley" High School All-Star basketball games.  The games are co-sponsorerd by the LA Times Valley Edition, and sportswriters from the paper selected the teams and coaches for the event.  According to a press release we received prior to the game, "This year, VSF plans to raise $50,000 in contributions from our community to support our student athletes."  While the sponsorship opportunities for this year's game are already over, there's no doubt that the VSF is always interested in donors who wish to contribute to this non-profit, 501(c)(3) entity.

The Valley Sports Foundation Mission Statement

Operate a non-profit foundation to organize youth sports and activities for local area athletics and to solicit tax-exempt contributions from individuals or companies that reside, work or operate in the Greater San Fernando Valley Region. These activities will be in addition to and subordinate to the athletes' school athletic commitments. All funds raised will be used to pay for costs associated with the various contests, activities and administration of the foundation. Any net profit generated from this enterprise will be contributed to local host schools athletic programs and individual athletes who are deemed to be in need of financial aid by the Board of Directors.
