Colbert To Pepperdine;
Knight To Portland--(May 21, 2001)

While we've been unable to find any official confirmation of the Gary Colbert signing, Recruiting USA is reporting that Pepperdine has picked up former Etiwanda HS standout Gary Colbert (6'-3" Jr. PG/SG).  Whether Colbert will be a walk-on or a scholarship player for the Waves is uncertain (R-USA's story doesn't say either, just that Colbert "has decided to renew his Div. I career at Pepperdine.")   The Pepperdine folks are not issuing any press releases, which makes us think that Gary will be walking on, at least for now.  Colbert started off as a Prop 48 player at Utah out of high school, and he then transferred to Dixie State College, in St. George, Utah, which is one of the better feeder-JUCO programs for Division I schools.

And since we're borrowing stuff from Recruiting USA, here's another tidbit from those guys:  Eric Knight (6'-2" JUCO So. PG/SG) from Westchester HS, who also happens to be the brother of UCLA's Billy Knight, has reportedly signed with Portland.  The R-USA site states that Knight has signed, and the last press release out of Portland (which was dated May 3, about three weeks ago) referred to it, but didn't have anything on Eric, at least nothing that we saw.  It only made a passing reference to Eric:

The [Patrick] Galos signing completes Holton’s first recruiting class of five players, including junior college guard Eric Knight (6-2, Los Angeles), high school center Erik Soderberg (6-9, Lake Elsinore, CA), high school guard Brian Kim (6-4, Langley, B.C.), and high school guard Karl Aaker (6-5, Reno, NV), who had signed with Portland in the fall of 2000.

Eric is a sweet-shooting two guard, probably not as athletic as his brother, but a very capable defender who will really help Portland.

Congratulations to both Eric Knight and Gary Colbert on their college choices.
