Jerry De Fabiis Picked As New
Claremont HS Coach--(May 2, 2001)
Jerry De Fabiis was named as the new head coach of the boys basketball program at Claremont High School yesterday, replacing former coach Mike Bateman. De Fabiis as an assistant for Bateman at Claremont from 1996-98. Bateman was promoted to a vice principal's job after directing the Wolfpack to a 22-8 season this year, inclujding making it to the CIF Southern Section Division I-A semifinals. De Fabiis is currently the coach at Ontario, where he's accumulated a 68-19 record, winning two Mt. Baldy League titles (1999 & 2000). This year, Ontario also made it to the D-IAAA semifinals, losing to eventual section champion Upland, which also lost its coach, Jeff Klein, who resigned to take the Chaffey College job.
De Fabiis is a 1988 graduate of Damien High where he played on the Spartans' basketball team with Bateman. He was offered the job Monday by Claremont Athletic Director Rick Dutton. De Fabiis was selected over 12 other applicants for the job; Fontana High coach John McNally was considered to be the other frontrunner.
