scibca tournament brackets and schedules

If July is "exposure" tournaments and camps, June is "high school" team tournament month. The LA Watts Summer Games is given special dispensation to start earlier than the normal "summertime" rules otherwise permit teams to get started. . . . and just as the LAWSG is winding up, in fact the same weekend, the SCIBCA Summer Tip Off Tourney will get started. This is the second annual SCIBCA Tournament, and while not as big as the 91-team behemoth that former Redondo Union Coach Jim Nielsen and the rest of the SCIBCA board put together last year, it's still one of the biggest and most diverse tournaments around.

This year's SCIBCA tournament will feature 72 teams, and will be played at 12 different gyms situated over a wide geographic area, from Santa Barbara in the north, to Alta Loma and Palm Springs in the East, to Santa Ana Valley and Ocean View in the South, and Redondo and Morningside in the west, and a bunch of other venues in between.

The tournament will start on Friday afternoon, June 8, and continue through 6/9 and 6/10. The brackets are arranged along regional lines, with schools from one region matched against nearby schools for the first round, and then each region's "champion" meeting on Sunday for a series of semifinals. Actually there will be two different championship games, each of which will occur on Sunday, June 10.

Ray Lokar, this year's SCIBCA President sent us a series of brackets and while we had heard that the SCIBCA tournament organizers were having trouble securing enough gyms, everything looks pretty good, with the exception that there is no site yet designated for the two finals on Sunday (EAST v. WEST and NORTH v. SOUTH). But if we know Ray, we're willing to bet he's working on the folks over at Azusa Pacific to use that as the site for the two championship games. APU just opened a beautiful, first class arena and events center, with seating for more than 5,000, and a great new floor, and there's no doubt this site would be the perfect spot for a championship game, especially the SCIBCA Tournament. .

The tournament is divided into four different regions, and 9 overall sub-regions. Teams competing are from the following schools in the following divisions:

The tournament is a three game guarantee, with the first game deciding which teams advance to the winner's half of the bracket, and which teams drop to the loser's (e.g. consolation) side of the bracket. Each venue will host four first round games on June 8. Here are the individual venue brackets:
