Silvey Dominguez To UTEP--(May 12, 2001)

Dang. . . USC's loss is UTEP's gain. USC Assistant Coach Silvey Dominguez has been named as the Associate Head Coach at the University of Texas-El Paso. We knew that Silvey Dominguez was looking around for another job, and in fact lost out on the head coaching job at St. Mary's, but we didn't know that he was interested in moving back to the Southwest, although that's not a real surprise considering he's from New Mexico. No word yet from USC on who may get the job there, but we've heard rumors that Coach Bibby may move Damon Archibald up the ladder, although at this point that's just rumor. EL PASO, Texas - Silvey Dominguez has been named assistant men's basketball coach at UTEP, Miner head coach Jason Rabedeaux announced on Friday. Dominguez succeeds Eddie Hill, who resigned to accept an assistant coaching position at the University of Portland a month ago. Dominguez, 47, brings 20 years of coaching experience to the UTEP program. He was an assistant coach at USC for the last five seasons.

"I'm excited about the opportunity to get back to a part of the country I grew up in," said Dominguez, a native of Grants, N.M. "I'm excited to coach at a school with the long-term tradition that UTEP has, with the Tim Hardaways, the Greg Fosters, the Antonio Davises and coach Haskins."

"We're thrilled about the addition of Silvey Dominguez to our staff," said Rabedeaux. "He brings a wealth of experience as a coach to our program, both on the recruiting trail and on the floor. To lure Silvey from the Pac-10 and an Elite Eight program, I think that speaks volumes for the direction our program is headed."

A 1975 graduate of New Mexico with a bachelor's degree in Spanish, Dominguez received his MBA from Western New Mexico in 1981. He previously was an assistant coach at Western New Mexico for three years (1980-82), Southern Colorado for two years (1985-86), Colorado State for two years (1987-88), Air Force for three years (1989-91) and St. Mary's for five years (1992-96).

Dominguez was tutored by Boyd Grant, one of the top defensive coaches in the country, at Colorado State. Dominguez was the architect of a St. Mary's defense which led the West Coast Conference in 1991-92, limiting foes to 66.6 points per game. St. Mary's scoring defense was 66.8 points per game in 1994-95.

Last season USC led the Pac-10 Conference in blocked shots (4.4 per game), while ranking third in the league in steals (7.6 spg), en route to a 24-10 record and NCAA Tournament Elite Eight appearance. The Trojans were second in the Pac-10 in steals in 1998-99 (9.43 spg). USC made three postseason tournament appearances with Dominguez as a member of the coaching staff - NCAA Tournament in 1997 and 2001, and NIT in 1999.

Dominguez's wife is named Deborah.
