Bennett Rounds Out Coaching Staff, Names Dan Shell Assistant Coach

Moraga, CA – Saint Mary’s College head men’s basketball coach Randy Bennett announced Dan Shell as an assistant coach. Shell, who was an assistant coach at Oklahoma University for two years before joining the Gael staff, will be the third assistant under Bennett. “We are excited to add a person with Dan’s experience to our coaching staff,” commented Bennett. “While at Oklahoma he gained valuable experience working with a top-25 program and under the tutelage of Kelvin Sampson he gained knowledge that will be invaluable to our success at Saint Mary’s College.”

In his position with Saint Mary’s, Shell’s job duties will include directing the summer individual and team camps, underclass recruiting, team travel, player development, game preparation and scouting, and overseeing team academics. “Ever since I worked with Coach Bennett at Pepperdine, it has been a goal of mine to work for him someday,” stated Shell. “It worked out perfectly that it could be Saint Mary’s which is closer to my home and where I went to school. I’m extremely excited to be part of a great basketball staff and to come on board at Saint Mary’s at a very exciting and challenging time.”

Shell served a two-year stint at Oklahoma before making the move back to the West Coast. As an assistant with the Sooners, Shell was responsible for the day-to-day operations of the basketball office as well as assisting in recruiting, contest scheduling and game scouting. While at Oklahoma, the Sooners appeared in two NCAA Tournaments. Prior to his time in Norman, Oklahoma, Shell was an assistant at Pepperdine University for one season where he performed many of the same duties.

Shell earned his B.S. in Economics with a minor in Business Administration from UC Berkeley in 1998. A Kraft Scholarship Academic Achievement recipient, Shell began his coaching career as an assistant coach at Skyline High School in 1996, where he served as the junior varsity head coach. During his time at Berkeley, Shell also covered local high school sports for the Oakland Tribune.
