San Diego State News:
Thank You Sir!--(June 6, 2001)
Leave it to our buddy Clark Francis to find out all the good stuff about how Steve Fisher just keeps on getting it done. This one is just another bit of icing on the cake for San Diego State: Steve Sir (6'-4" Sr. SG) from Cretin-Derham HS in St. Paul, Minnesota, has committed to the Aztecs. According to Francis at the HoopScoop,
Another recruiting class that moved up 25 spots today belongs to San Diego State, which has a walk-on who hadn't previously been listed with the Aztecs recruiting class. We're talking about 6'4 Steve Sir from St. Paul (Cretin-Derham) MN, who shot the lights out last summer at the adidas Big Time Tournament. Sir, who will get a scholarship a soon as one becomes available, joins 6'9 Michel Mackell from Porterville (JC) CA, 6'4 Tommy Johnson from Los Angeles (Crenshaw) CA, and 6'8 Tremaine Davis from Pittsburgh (JC) CA, all of whom figure to make a major impact from day one, in a recruiting class that now is ranked #41 nationally. And don't forget about 6'5 Tony Bland and 6'7 Brandon Smith, both of whom sat out last year after transferring from Syracuse and Michigan a year ago. If that weren't enough, nearly everybody is also back from last season's 14-14 team. So it wouldn't surprise us if the San Diego State is one of the most improved teams in college basketball next year.
We don't quite understand the addition of Sir, not strictly from a recruiting point of view, which is entirely understandable, but we had thought San Diego State was done recruiting for the year and out of scholarship spots, something which seems to be implicit in Francis' report. The big question is whether someone is going to be leaving the program soon, whether a scholarship can even be had this season under the 5/8 rule, or whether someone who signed already won't qualify (a distinct possibility given the fact that Tommy Johnson has already been down that road, and isn't a sure thing to get a qualifying score on the SAT or the requisite GPA). Of course, we don't really want to speculate too much about this, because academics are something that are really private to each student, so we'll all just have to wait and see. . . . But back to Sir. If you got a chance to see him last year in Vegas, then you know what Clark is talking about. A terrific shooter, someone who will really be an asset to the Aztecs.
