Next Stop, Transfer Central-- (June 9, 2001)
These are some confirmed and some rumored transfers. . . . take them for what they're worth, which may not be much:
Marcel Jones (6'-4" Fr. G) will transfer from Chaminade in West Hills to Mater Dei in Santa Ana. According to his father Michael, who spoke with the LA Times, the family is moving to Santa Ana for job reasons. Jones averaged 5.8 ppg last season. He also attended Sierra Canyon Middle School, which was formerly attended by Harrison Schaen before his family also left the San Fernando Valley for Santa Ana three years ago (Harrison was actually two years ahead of Jones, but repeated the 8th grade before enrolling two years ago as a freshman at Mater Dei).
Derrick Williams (6'-4" So. F/G) who played for Campbell Hall's varsity program for part of his freshman season and all of last year, will transfer to LA Price, which won the CIF Southern Section V-A title and the State Championship in Division V, defeating St. Elizabeth of Oakland in the final. Campbell Hall did not make the playoffs this past season, playing in a very tough Delphic League.
Marcellus Robertson (6'-7" Jr. F) from Sonora HS in Orange County, will transfer to La Habra HS, according to Bob Gottlieb, who is now writing a series of daily stories on recruiting and high school players at his BWBA "Inside Basketball Report". According to Gottlieb, there were some personality problems which surfaced last season at Sonora which led to some major defections from the team.
James Matthews (6'-7" Jr. PF), who transferred from LA Manual Arts to LA Palisades, stayed there for two seasons, then transferred mid season last year to CIF-SS Verbum Dei (where he was known as James Muhammed on the roster), has not only changed his name back to Matthews, but has been rumored to be leaving the Verb for months now. Most of the travel team rosters that we've seen have him now spending his senior season at nearby LA Fremont, and this week Tracy Pierson of PrepWestHoops also floated the same posulations about Matthews-Muhammed.
And since we're simply borrowing other people's stuff, Tracy also noted what those of us who hang around the travel circuit have also been hearing about some other talented players, namely that with the absence of former head coach from Dominguez, that most of the star players will be seeking greener pastures, including Darius Sanders (6'-4" Jr. PF) who is rumored to be transferring to Compton Centennial, and Bobby Jones (6'-7" Jr. F), who is Dominguez' best player in the rising senior class, may be transferring to Long Beach Poly where he'll team up with UCLA football-commit Marcedes Lewis (6'-7" Jr. F) to make a very nice frontcourt combination.
