SoCal-Native Solomon Brown Will
Not Be Leaving Iona--(Aug. 13, 2001)

If you've been frequenting our message board over the past several weeks, then you know that there have been several messages posted concerning Solomon "Chili" Brown (6'-2" Fr. PG) who graduated from St. Thomas More prep school this past spring and who signed a letter of intent to attend Iona.  The rumor mill had Brown returning back to SoCal, to a junior college near his family home in Hawaiian Gardens.  However, according to Recruiting USA, the rumors are false, and Brown spoke with Iona head coach Jeff Ruland, and has decided to enroll at Iona where it is anticipated he will vie compete for significant playing time for the Gaels.  Last season at St. Thomas More, he helped lead the team to a second straight New England Prep School Athletic Conference Class A title, and with his speed and quickness he could help Iona to a Metro Atlantic Conference title.  Iona also has another former SoCal-based player on the roster for 2001-2002, Kenya Carruthers, a 6'-6" Jr. F from the Bronx who played at LA City College for head coach Mike Miller.  Of course, Iona, which had a 20-game-winning season (actually it was 22-11 overall and 12-6 in conference) will have it's work cut out this season, trying to get back to the NCAA tournament.  Last season, the Gaels won their second consecutive MAAC tournament and got a bid to the Big Dance, but lost in the first round of the Midwest Regionals to Mississippi in a heart-breaker, a 2 point loss which knocked them out of the tournament.
