Derek Stockalper Commits To USD--(Aug. 14, 2001)
Our friend Ollie Goulston from San Diego sent us an e-mail with a media release which he is circulating today announcing that Derek Stockalper (6'-5" Sr. G) from San Diego's Carlsbad HS, who played for the Southern California All-Stars (aka, So.Cal.Hoops) travel team which was also coached by Ollie and Tommy Lewis, has given a verbal commitment to the University of San Diego's head coach Brad Holland. Here's the release:
Derek Stockalper, a senior to be at Carlsbad High School (Carlsbad, California) has accepted a basketball scholarship to attend the University of San Diego next year.
Stockalper, a 6-05 guard, was a San Diego Union-Tribune 1st Team All-County selection last year as well as the North County & Avocado League Player of the Year. A 3-year varsity starter and 2-time All-Avocado League selection, Stockalper was also picked 1st Team All-Division 1 for the San Diego section and was chosen to the Junior All-State team by Cal-Hi Sports. This past summer, he attended the Adidas ABCD Camp in Teaneck, New Jersey and also participated in the "Top 30" All-Star Game at the Full Court Press All-West Camp in Los Angeles.
"I'm really pleased to have the opportunity to accept a scholarship from the University of San Diego. It's not easy to select one school from all the ones that showed interest in me. Some of them are prestigious academic institutions and others have phenomenal basketball programs. I believe that USD offers both. I love the school and I feel that I have a very good chance to come in and contribute on the basketball floor right away. I'm also happy to stay here at home in San Diego and have all of my family and friends at the games. I can't wait to get started and play for Coach Holland and his staff."
Stockalper carries a 3.60 overall G.P.A. and is fully qualified with a 1130 SAT score. He will sign a National Letter of Intent to attend the University of San Diego on November 14, 2001.
