Washington State Picks Up Two
Transfers: Schlatter & Hughey--(Aug. 31, 2001)

This isn't, strictly speaking, news either from or about SoCal, and in fact it's kind of a stretch, but hey, it's August, and things are slow, so what the heck.  At least one of these guys played in the SoCal area at most of the top spring, fall and summer evaluation events and then played in a league against some of the local SoCal WCC schools....the other guy, well, we'll confess we've never seen him.

Washington State's head coach Paul Graham issued a press release yesterday announcing that Chris Schlatter (6'-7" So. G/F) from St. Mary's College in the Bay Area (where former Pepperdine and St. Louis University assistant coach Randy Bennett was named as the new head coach in April) and Cedrick Hughey (6'-6" Jr. G) from Westark College, will transfer to Washington State this fall.

We've seen Chris Schlatter play a lot in high school and when he played with Oakland Slam N Jam alongside point guard Joe See.  Chris is an excellent face-up wing guard/forward, a good rebounder who will need to bulk up a bit for the Pac-10, but he's got huge upside.  As for Hughey, we've never seen him, and have no idea what his game is like.   Here's the official press release from Washington State on the impending transfers (typos and all):

Transfers from Westark College and St. Mary's (Calif.) join Cougs. (8/30/01)
Aug. 30, 2001

PULLMAN, Wash. -- Washington State Men's Basketball Head Coach Paul Graham announced the addition of two players to the Cougar team, Thursday.

Cedrick Hughey, a 6-foot-6, 195-pound guard from Westark College (Fort Smith, Ark.) and Chris Schlatter, a 6-foot-7, 190-pound guard from St. Mary's College (Calif.) will both transfer to WSU.

Hughey is eligible to play this season while Schlatter will have to sit out a year per NCAA rules.

Hughey was an all-Region II selection last season at Westark after averaging 13 points and six rebounds per game. As a senior at Waldo High School (Waldo, Ark.), Hughey averaged over 20 points a game and was an All-State selection.

"Cedrick is very athletic and an exciting player to watch," Westark Head Coach Doc Sadler said. "He has the ability to play the perimeter as well as post up against players his size. He shoots the three-pointer very well. He will have to get adjusted to the speed of the Pac-10, but he definitely has the ability to do that."

Schlatter, a native of Lafayette, Calif., averaged 8.0 points and 2.9 rebounds as a freshman at St. Mary's last season. He appeared in 27 games, including 17 as a starter and scored in double figures 11 times. Among his double figure scoring games was a 17-point effort at Gonzaga, including five three-pointers.

From Dec. 14-29, he scored in double figures four consecutive games and nearly missed a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds at Loyola, Chicago.

Schlatter led the Gaels with 35-percent shooting from three-point range and was second on the team with 40.4 percent shooting overall. He chose WSU over California, Gonzaga, Nevada, UNLV, San Diego State, Utah and Washington. Schlatter will walk on for the Cougars despite scholarships offers from several other schools.

"We are excited we have added two more players to our family," Graham said. "Cedrick can help us immediately and fill the void of Mike Bush and Framecio Little. He is a versatile player who can help us on the perimeter and inside.

"Chris coming to us from St. Mary's gives him the advantage of sitting out a year and learning our system like (2001 Pacific-10 Conference Newcomer of the Year) J Locklier did when he transferred from Miami, Ohio," Graham added. "He will help solidifies [sic] us in the future because he has three years of eligibility left."
