UC Riverside Will Hold Midnight Madness

We received the following press release from Ross French, UC Riverside's SID, and thought we'd pass it along. If you're out in the Inland Empire area, and want to check out some of the excitement of the upcoming college season, this will be a great opportunity to welcome UC Riverside into the ranks of D-I as they will play their first full season of Big West Conference play, and give you a chance to meet the team. Here's what's happening:

UCR to Kick Off Basketball Season With Midnight Madness on Friday, October 12

The UC Riverside Highlanders will kick off their 2001-2002 basketball season late Friday night and into Saturday morning as they host Midnight Madness at the UCR Student Recreation Center. Doors open at 11:00 PM and admission is free.

The event, which will also be televised live on Charter Communications Channel 3 in the Riverside area, will be fans first introduction to the 2001-02 men's and women's basketball teams.

In addition, the event will feature an opportunity to win $500 cash with a half-court shot, a three point shooting contest, and the opportunity for each fan to win a t-shirt by sinking a free throw.

The teams will be introduced shortly after midnight, as Saturday, October 13 in the first day of organized practice by NCAA rules.

"We hope to see a great crowd out there," UCR Athletics Director Stan Morrison said. "It is a great opportunity for students and the community to meet our fine student-athletes."
