Pac-10: Oregon State Signs 3 To NLIs:
Holt, Field, Brown--(Nov. 15, 2001)

Ok, not a single SoCal guy in this bunch. But since they'll be coming here to Pauley and wherever USC winds up playing (the Lyon Center, Sports Arena, Forum, Staples, the Providence HS gym), you might as well get to know these three, because you'll be seeing them next season in Pac-10 play, and Ritchie McKay has gotten three very good early signings which should help the Beavers immensely. Corvallis, Ore. - Oregon State University men's basketball head coach Ritchie McKay has announced the signing of Kerbrell Brown, Kevin Field, and Justin Holt to national letters of intent. Brown will enter OSU as a junior in the fall of 2002, while Field and Holt will be true-freshmen.

Brown is a 6-foot-7 forward who is currently enrolled at Dodge City Community College in Kansas. He played in just 12 games last season as a freshman at DCCC while concentrating on academic studies. Brown averaged 7.6 points and shot .492 from the field, including .471 (16-34) from three-point range.

"Kerbrell is a very versatile and athletic player," Dodge City head coach Brian Hoberecht said. "He can drive to the basket, hit the three, and is a solid rebounder. He is also improving his play with his back to the basket. There is no doubt he is a high major Division I prospect."

Brown, who was also recruited by Colorado State, Oklahoma State, and Alabama-Birmingham, played his high school basketball at O. Perry Walker in New Orleans. He averaged 27 points as a senior and earned all-league and all-metro honors.

"I feel very comfortable with my decision to attend Oregon State University," Brown said. "I consider my strength to be my shooting. I can score from a lot of different areas on the floor."

"Kerbrell is an explosive player, who can play in the post or on the perimeter," McKay said. "He is also a solid post defender."

Field is a 6-10 center from Wilson High School in Tacoma, Wash. He averaged 16.1 points and 10.4 rebounds as a junior last season and was a second team all-league selection.

"I just seem to fit in well with the coaching staff and players on the team," Field said of his decision. "I wanted to be a part of a program that is on the rise, and I believe Oregon State is in that category."

"He was moved up a grade, so he's a young senior," Wilson head coach Larry Tommervick said. "He's really just growing into his body. He is an excellent shooter; in fact he'll be our best three-point threat this season. His potential is unlimited, and in time he could be a dominate force in the Pac-10 Conference."

Field received recruiting letters from numerous programs around the nation, including every Pac-10 institution, according to Tommervick. He narrowed his choice to Oregon State, Gonzaga, and Washington, before verbally committing to the Beavers late in the summer.

"Kevin has a very nice shooting touch around the basket and has soft hands," McKay added. "He has a very bright future in our system, and has an opportunity to be a great player down the road."

Holt is a 6-6 power forward from Lincoln High School in Tacoma. He averaged 15.4 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 3.0 steals during his junior season. He led Lincoln to the Class 4A championship last season and was the MVP of the Narrows League.

"Justin is a very good hard-nosed athlete," McKay stated. "He'll be a fan favorite due to his enthusiasm for the game."

Holt chose Oregon State over Idaho, Wyoming, Gonzaga, Utah, Boise State, Loyola Marymount, UC Irvine, and Portland.

"The main reason I chose Oregon State is the coaching staff; they're just awesome," Holt said. "One member of the coaching staff was at almost every summer league game, and that made a real impression on me. The fact that my friend Kevin (Field) is attending Oregon State as well is just another factor, but it really came down to the coaching staff."

"Justin is a very good player, he's extremely athletic," Lincoln head coach Tim Kelly said. "He has a lot of room to improve, this will be only his third year of organized basketball. He plays the four or five position for us, but will likely be more of a three-player at the college level."

McKay has one more available scholarship, but is likely not to use it until the second letter of intent period April 10-May 15.
