Other Scores From BCW Tournament:
All Other SoCal Teams Win--(Nov. 29, 2001)
The Fresno Bee had some good information this morning on the Fresno BCW-Kiwanis Invitational. Not all the games played in the tournament thus far (we heard that San Joaquin Memorial, without Antonio Lawrence who is still playing footaball, lost in the first round, but couldn't locate the story...if anyone has the details send them in), but those played yesterday, and other than the loss by Crenshaw to Clovis, all the other local teams from the LA-OC region won: Canyon Springs beat Buchannan, Capo Valley beat Madera and Domginuez beat Bullard. Here are some excerpts from the story published in the Bee today by sportswriter Lisa Burnett:
Canyon Springs 77, Buchannan 50-- From the Fresno Bee: Buchanan coach Tony Petersen liked the way the Bears' first game started, but he was quite displeased with the way the season opened. That's because the game against Canyon Springs, which began with Buchanan grabbing a 16-9 first-quarter lead, ended with the Cougars claiming a 77-50 victory in a BCW/Kiwanis Invitational first-round game, which was the season-opener for both teams. "We quit. We quit working," Petersen said. "Everything that made us successful early in the game, we quit doing." Canyon Springs coach Jeff Stovall had a different take on how things transpired. "We just felt that when we started playing a little better defense, we'd be all right," Stovall said. "We were a little slow getting started -- that's why they got off to the 16-9 lead. We weren't playing any defense." Defense, rebounding and hot 3-point shooting helped the Cougars take over. Highly regarded Canyon Springs junior Richard Cobbs scored nine of his game-high 23 points in the second quarter. Carlton Arnwine's steal and driving layup tied it for the first time with 4 minutes, 23 seconds left in the first half. Later, a six-point run put Canyon Springs ahead 33-26 before Ryan Smith's rebound putback pulled the Bears to 33-28 at the half. The third quarter was all Cougars. Andre McGee made four of his game-high six 3-pointers as Canyon Springs outscored Buchanan 24-9 to take a 57-37 lead. "That's one of our strong points," Stovall said. "We have quite a few kids who can start hitting the 3s." The Bears went almost four minutes without a basket beginning midway through the third quarter. Matt McDonald ended the drought by making a 3-pointer from the left wing with about 25 seconds left in the quarter. "We were just too slow recognizing things, too slow in every phase of the game," Petersen said. McGee finished with 22 points, and Tron Smith had 12 for the Cougars. Brandon Blount scored 14 and Tommie Johnson had 13 to lead Buchanan.
Garces 75, Hoover (Fresno) 51-- From the Fresno Bee: Robert Swift, a 7-foot sophomore, scored eight of his game-high 24 points as Garces opened a 21-11 first-quarter lead over Hoover en route to a 75-51 victory at Buchanan. Kevin Robinson and Durell Powell scored 12 apiece for Hoover.
Capistrano Valley 67, Madera 63--From the Fresno Bee: Madera rallied from a 54-41 deficit with a 22-point fourth quarter but fell to Capistrano Valley 67-63 at Buchanan. Gary Moran scored seven of his 18 points and Jason Brooks six of his seven in the final quarter for the Coyotes. Pete DeCasas scored 29 points, and Matt Sweany had 19 for Capistrano Valley.
Dominguez 99, Bullard 62--From the Fresno Bee: Highly touted senior Keion Kindred and Travon Free scored eight points apiece in the first quarter as Dominguez rolled to a 26-18 lead on the way to a 92-62 victory over Bullard at Buchanan. Free finished with 19 points, Kindred had 18, and Deon Marcus scored 15 for Dominguez. Jermaine Bynum led the Knights with 13 points.
Ayala 76, San Joaquin Memorial 63 --From the LA Times: Dan Larson scored 16 of his game high 19 points in the second half to lead Ayala (1-0). Kyle Gregory added 15 points and 8 assists in the win at Clovis West high.
