59th Annual BH Tourney
Set For 12/3-12/8--(Nov. 19, 2001)
|
The 59th Annual Beverly Hills Elliot Invitational Tournament is slated for Decmber 3-8, 2001 at the "Swim Gym" at Beverly Hills HS.
For those who don't know a lot about this tournament, it's named in honor of Sax Elliot, a Beverly Hills coach and physical education instructor who taught at the school from 1935-50 ( with a four-year interruption to serve in the U.S. Navy during World War II). Elliot was responsible for the tournament's creation and the construction of its unique home, the Swim-Gym, whose basketball court covers a swimming pool. The Swim-Gym could well be America's most-seen high school gymnasium, thanks to its appearance it Frank Capra's classic 1946 film, "It's a Wonderful Life." Elliot also made it the world's first gym to feature glass basketball backboards and the square behind the basket to improve the shooter's aim. His other innovations included multi-colored basketballs, with one version later adapted for use by the American Basketball Assn. He later became the basketball coach at Cal State Los Angeles. He died in 1996.
The tournament doesn't have any real marquee teams this year, but there will still be some excellent players, including a solid Cleveland team, and several guys like Kevin Gardner and Shawn Weinstein from Peninsula, as well as Rob Koslowsky, Dino Fekaris and Allan Ellis from Crespi. Here's the first round schedule for the tournament, followed by the bracket:
Monday, December 3, 2000 |
|
3:00 p.m. | LA High v. Buena |
4:30 p.m. | Crespi v. Birmingham |
6:00 p.m. | Peninsula v. Hollywood |
7:30 p.m. | LACES v. Beverly Hills |
Tuesday, December 4, 2000 |
|
3:00 p.m. | Palisades v. Cleveland |
4:30 p.m. | Hart v. Culver City |
6:00 p.m. | Ventura v. Hamilton |
7:30 p.m. | North Hollywood v. Murphy |
Following the first round, teams either go on to the championship side of the bracket, or move over to the consolation bracket. We've slightly renumbered the games from the original bracket we were provided with (to avoid retyping a lot of confusing info...really we think our bracket makes a lot more sense.....why have consolation games "A" "B" "C", etc, when all the games can be numbered?). Still, the bracket looks the same so it won't make a difference except to the purists....
