O.C. Register Begins Season Coverage:
League Updates & Player Info--(Nov. 19, 2001)

We knew about this a while ago, but just never got around to mentioning it: The Orange County Register, beating everyone (LA Times, Daily News, etc) to the punch, is beginning it's local coverage of high school sports early, i.e., today. The Register covered the Century League, and accordingly, we've updated where appropriate, our own league preview of the Century League which we posted in our "H.S. Previews" section on October 30, 2001.

Since today marks the first day schools in the Southern Section can hold scrimmages (and most schools will in fact scrimmage this week), it's fitting and appropriate that the coverage begins. Unfortunately, at the moment, the Register's coverage is only available in the print version (they'll probably do an online "Prep Basketball" section for their website, just as the paper did for football, but it's not ready yet.....if it is, we just didn't see it). Today's print version of the Register though features a league profile for the Century League (we're guessing they're covering all the OC leagues in alphabetical order --ok, so the Academy League doesn't mention full coverage....watch, it will be in a "small schools" profile).

The OC Register league profiles are nice though because they also cover the girls' teams, so those of you who follow girls' hoops will want to pick up a paper today to check out the Century League profiles (we don't have a clue about these girls teams, but the two photos featured at the top of the preview are of Lauren Yadon 6'-3" Sr. C from Villa Park and Jennifer Cuoco 5'-9" So. G, also from Villa Park). The boys' preview of the Century League features photos of Villa Park's Sean Phaler 6'-9" Jr. F, Brandon Rogers 6'-1" Sr. G from Santa Ana Valley, and Orange's Durrell Moss 6'-3" Jr. G/F (who is noted as one of the "newcomers to watch").
