Official 2001-02 CIF-SS Boys'
Playoff
Division Alignments Released--(Nov. 27, 2001)
It's only taken since August, but the CIF-SS finally
released the new divisional alignments for purposes of the Southern Section playoffs which
will take place at the end of the regular season in February, 2002. Here are the official
numbers for each division (click on the link for a list of schools in each division):
There have been some big movements of teams from their
traditional division placements which will create some new rivalries, and no doubt will
upset a few more traditionalists.
Division I-AA now has Eisenhower
and Long Beach Poly as the clearly emerging favorites this year.
Division I-A has El Toro, Glendora,
Loyola, and Mission Viejo as some of the stronger teams this
year.
In Division II, the most notable changes are the teams that
are missing, as well as those new teams who have moved down from Division I:
In II-AA, you'll find Claremont, Mater
Dei and Villa Park.
In II-A, gone are Artesia and Dominguez, and
the strongest teams are now likely to be Redondo Union and Santa
Margarita.
In Division III, there has also been a lot of movement, and
the new alignments should silence the critics who say that Division III hasn't been truly
competitive for the past 5 years or so:
Division III-AA now has Dominguez,
Artesia, and Ocean View, but doesn't have traditional D-III
teams like Chaminade and Harvard-Westlake, both of which have been moved downward.
Division III-A looks to be a battle
between Bishop Montgomery, Compton Centennial and Muir.
In Division IV, there has also been quite a
bit of movement both downward from III and upward from V.
In Division IV-AA, you'll now find teams
like Chaminade, Crossroads, Harvard-Westlake,
St. Bernard, St. Paul and St. Monica as
some of the stronger teams this year
In Division V-AA, some of the leading
favorites will be teams such as Calvary Chapel Downey, Montclair
Prep, St. Anthony's, Western Christian, and
Yeshiva.
In Division V-AA, it should be Buckley,
Hillcrest Christian GH, Ribet, Rolling Hills Prep,
Pacific Hills, and Santa Clara as the top teams to beat.
In Division V-A, just one word: Price.
There may be some others who will battle it out for second, like Tarbut v'
Torah or Stoneridge Prep, but we don't see anyone capable
of knocking off the Knights.
