The official CIF season started this week, and as we've done in years past, we will continue to pass along scores and game details where they are available and can be obtained either from those who send them to us or from the local papers.  If you know of a game that we missed, a score unreported, send it in along with whatever details you may have that you don't find below.

Tournament Scores from Wed., Nov. 28, 2001

Beaumont Tournament
Championship Quarterfinals

Apple Valley 71, Moreno Valley 60--Senior 6-3 guard Jamal Holden had 26 points for the visiting Sun Devils as they defeated Moreno Valley in a second- round game at the Beaumont Tournament. Senior 6-5 forward Darrel Sipes added 15 points for the Sun Devils (2-0). Senior 6-2 guard Carlton Murray had 14 points and grabbed 13 rebounds.

San Bernardino 82, Banning 78--Senior 6-4 guard Walter White scored 37 points and grabbed eight rebounds for the San Bernardino boys basketball team as they defeated Banning 82-78 at the Beaumont tournament. Senior 6-4 forward Joey Palmer had 15 points and pulled down eight rebounds for the Cardinals (2-0). Senior 6-8 center Keylon Daniels had nine points.

Indio 61, Rim Of The World 55-- Junior guard Kurt Oliver scored 21 points and pulled down five rebounds for the Scots (1-1) as they fell to the Rajahs in the second-round of the Beaumont tournament. Senior forward Kyle Rattet scored nine points, had 14 rebounds and five assists, while junior guard Roy Miller added 12 points. Indio improved to 2-0 in the high school boys basketball season with a 61-55 victory over Rim of the World in the Beaumont Tournament.  Earl Isaacson led the Rajahs with 17 points and nine rebounds. Daniel Cruz chipped in 16 points with five assists and Anthony Lopez finished with 16 points in a second-half surge. Indio erased a 24-21 halftime deficit for the win. San Bernardino 78, West Valley 76 (OT) --  San Bernardino's Walter White scored 42 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to help the Cardinals edge Hemet West Valley in overtime in the first round of the Beaumont Tip-Off Classic. Center Keylon Daniels added 10 points, seven rebounds and five blocks, and Eric Thaxton had 13 points and 10 assists. San Bernardino used an aggressive pressure defense in the third quarter to build a 54-47 lead, but West Valley rallied to tie 70-70 at the end of regulation.  West Valley (0-1) -- Nevarez 10, LeBaron 28, Rodriguez 12, Davis 10, Williams 13, White 3. Chaparral 64, Coachella Valley 38 --Allen Craig scored six of his 14 points in the first quarter as Temecula Chaparral jumped to a 17-4 lead and then cruised to a victory in the championship quarterfinals of the Beaumont Tip-off Classic. Brent Chodola had seven rebounds and Manuel Montano blocked four shots for the Pumas.  Junior David Uriaite led the Arabs with seven points, while Nate Ramos and Chris Limone added five points apiece for CV. Lutheran broke the game open in the second quarter with an 18-8 run. Jared Davis had 23 rebounds for Anza Hamilton. Tri-City Christian 66, West Shores 18--The Tri-City Christian boys basketball team won its season opener 66-18 against West Shores at the Borrego Springs Rams Invitational. Junior forward Marcus Harkness led the Eagles (1-0) with nine points, 10 rebounds and six steals.

Whittier Christian 56, Oxford Academy 44--Tim Albeanu had 21 points and Frank Sanchez had 10 points, 17 rebounds 10 steals and seven assists for Whittier Christian (1-1).

Bolsa Grande 83, Aliso Niguel 59--Omar Amaral had 37 points and David Doan chipped in with 17 for Bolsa Grande (1-1). Austin Schwab had 23 points for Aliso Niguel (0-3).

Burbank 54, Eagle Rock 26 --Jason Flowers had 14 and seven steals to lead Burbank (1-0) which outscored Eagle Rock 21-0 in the first quarter.

University 79, Agoura 75 --Rueben Boykins scored 22 points for University (1-0).

 


J.W. North Tournament
Pool Play

Antelope Valley 75, Cathedral City 63--Ollie Bradley scored 23 points to lead Antelope Valley (1-0) at J.W. North High. Cathedral City dropped the season opener at the J.W. North tournament in Riverside. The Lions trailed 39-24 at halftime, but had a solid effort from junior Jared Otteson with 18 points and senior Brandon Gray with 13. Antelope Valley was 20 of 37 from the free throw line.

Victor Valley 62, Woodbridge 52--Joe Holly scored 16 points for Victor Valley (1-0). Patrick Haddan scored 17 points for Woodbridge (0-1) and teammate David Burgess had 14 points.

Rialto 74, Perris 55 -- Sophomore forward Sean Green scored a game-high 18 points and grabbed five rebounds as the Knights (1-0) defeated the Panthers in the first round of the J.W. North tournament. The Knights led 51-23 at halftime and went on to earn the victory.

Antelope Valley Christian 65, Grace Brethren 53 --Tony Uebelhardt and Jeremiah Nurse each had 12 points for Antelope Valley Christian (1-0).

Bishop Diego 65, Hillcrest Christian TO 37-- Bishop Diego High easily beat Hillcrest Christian 65-37 Wednesday night in the first round of the Bishop Diego-Laguna Blanca Tournament.  Pat Minehan scored 16 points to lead the Cardinals to their season-opening win at home.  "It was a typical first game of year," said Bishop coach John Ward. "We got a chance to play everyone a quality amount of time. Pat Minehan had a good game. He did very well. We didn't shoot the ball exceptionally well. I'm pleased with our teamwork and effort." Freshman Andy Aijian scored 10 points in his first game and Tony Munoz lit a spark under the Cardinals in the second half. "Tony Munoz ignited us in the third quarter," Ward said. New Roads 51, Laguna Blanca 44 --The Owls had only two points at the end of the first quarter and couldn't make up the difference in their opening loss in the Bishop Diego-Laguna Blanca Tournament at Laguna Blanca's gym.   The Owls did force 17 turnovers, but weren't able to convert on many of them early, allowing New Roads (from L.A.) to jump out to a 31-15 lead at the half.  "New Roads is big and quick," said Owl coach Peter de Tagyos. "We couldn't convert those turnovers, that was the difference." Eric Geeb had 12 points and six steals, Andy Nelson added 11 rebounds and Jelani Hicks had five steals to go with his 12 points. Esperanza 63, Servite 51--Mark Lovein scored 23 points and Burke Spencer added 17 points as the Aztecs (2-0) defeated the Friars (0-2) at Loara.

St. Bernard 61, Carson 59--Bruce Bevans scored 20 points for St. Bernard (1-1).   Greg Taylor, Bruce Bevans and Rocky Hinds combined for 53 points for St. Bernard. Carson is also 1-1.

West Torrance 60, Mira Costa 58--Dewayne Hollyfield had 20 points, but West (1-1) needed overtime to win. Mira Costa is 1-1.

Peninsula 72, Torrance 47--Kevin Gardner scored 34 points to lead the Panthers (2-0) to victory in the second round.

Serra 56, Banning 51--Eugene Jeter scored 19 points to lead Serra (2-0). Banning is 0-2.

 


Mission Viejo Diablo Classic

San Clemente 50, Sonora 41--Marcus Blackshire scored 16 points as the San Clemente boys basketball team upset No.8 Sonora, 50-41, on Wednesday in the Diablo Inferno Classic at Mission Viejo High. The Tritons (2-0) had a four-point lead at halftime and held the Raiders (0-1) to nine points in the third quarter. Beau Berenger added 13 points for San Clemente.

Mission Viejo 79, Anaheim 32--Brian McTeigue scored 13 points, including three three-pointers, and Travis Niesen added 11 as the Diablos (2-0) defeated the Colonists (0-2


 

Norte Vista Tournament

Poly 56, Woodcrest Christian 39-- Riverside Poly picked up play in the second half, closing the third quarter with a five-point lead and opening the fourth with a 6-0 run to put Woodcrest Christian away in the second game of pool play in the Norte Vista Tournament. Jeremy Lopez scored 16 of his 24 points in the second half for Riverside Poly. Senior 6-1 guard Thad Orr scored 17 points for Yucaipa, while senior 5-9 guard Matt King added six points and seven steals. Redondo 68, Palisades 51--Redondo guard Keith Ellison scored 17 points and had 11 rebounds as the Sea Hawks defeated Palisades, 68-51, in the quarterfinals of the Redondo Pacific Shores Tournament on Wednesday at Redondo. Redondo (2-0) will play Horizon of San Diego in the semifinals Friday at 7:30 p.m. Bishop Montgomery meets Fairfax at 6 p.m. in the other semifinal.

Leuzinger 58, St. Monica 34--Dorell Wright scored a game-high 22 points for Leuzinger (1-1). St. Monica is 0-2.

Bishop Montgomery 90, Locke 48--Fred Washington scored a game-high 25 points to lead the Knights (2-0).

Fairfax 94, Valencia 54--Evan Burns scored 31 points for Fairfax (2-0).

 


Rosemead Tournament

Ganesha 51, Rosemead 46 --Senior Albert Cardona and junior Mario Cobian both scored 16 points, but it wasn't enough as the Panthers fell to the Giants. Michael Efevbhra scored a game-high 26 points for Ganesha.

El Camino Real 66, San Marino 38 --Todd Wolfson scored 19 points with 12 in the second half to lead El Camino at Rosemead high. Sophomore Rai Colston had 13 assists in the win for El Camino (2-0). San Marino is now 0-1.

Redlands East Valley 76, Kaiser--Despite a 34 point performance by Fontana Kaiser guard Paul Smith, Redlands East Valley was able to get the win in a second day pool play game in the San Gorgonio Tournament. Kaiser (1-1), Anthony Smith had 11 points and pulled down nine rebounds, while Walter Wallace added 15 points for the Wildcats. San Gorgonio 79, La Quinta (LQ) 57 --San Bernardino San Gorgonio outscored La Quinta 27-14 in the fourth quarter to breeze to victory at the San Gorgonio Tip-off Classic. Kevin Houston had eight of his 17 points and Khorry Lewis added 7 of his 22 points to lead San Gorgonio in the fourth quarter. Saugus Tournament

Westlake 64, Lancaster 61--P.J. Isaacson, a junior who transferred in September from Australia, scored 25 points, and Jonathan Wiley added 17 for the Warriors in a second-round game at Saugus High.

Saugus 89, Verdugo Hills 59--Mike Jones scored 26 points and Marc Holmquist added 21, including four 3-pointers, to lead the host Centurions over the Dons of Tujunga.  Saugus, which led 41-21 at halftime, also got nine points from Saam Golpashin. Brian Gilbert, John Newcombe and Adrian Buencamino chipped in six points apiece.  Danny Castro had 14 points and four rebounds for Verdugo Hills. Luis Cortes added 13 for the Dons.

Glendale 55, Buena 48--Hugo Guerrero scored 24 points and Riley Van Patton added 16 despite battling the flu to lead Glendale over Buena of Ventura.  Hugo Guerrero had 17 rebounds to lead Glendale

Harvard-Westlake 69, Ridgeview 56--Bryce Taylor and Bobby Weinberger combined for 36 points and Ed White, Jr. added 11 for the Wolverines.

 


Serrano Tournament
Pool Play

El Segundo 69, Granite Hills 39--Dashawn Strong scored 28 points and had 11 rebounds for El Segundo (1-1).

Silverado 63, Sultana 62--Jaime Lester hit two free-throws with two seconds to play to earn the win for Silverado (1-1). Lester added 15 points for the Hawks. Senior 6-2 forward Josh Puckett had 15 points, grabbed four rebounds for the Sultans. Junior 6-0 forward Greg Williams had ten rebounds. Senior 6-0 guard Michael Shumaker had nine rebounds.

Jurupa Valley 71, Palmdale 51--Mike West had a career-high four three-pointers and a career-high 18 points as Jurupa Valley won a pool-play game of the Serrano Tournament.  Jurupa Valley (1-0) -- Brito 9, Wright 12, Frias 20, West 18, Zucca 2, Ayala 2, Jones 2, Marcroft 4, Belangeri 2. Palmdale (0-1) -- Baldwin 4, Jaldana 12, Carod 2, Norriss 7, McElroy 12, Jones 8, Slade 6.  Halftime score -- Jurupa Valley 34-20. Three-point goals -- Brito 3, Frias 3, West 4, Jaldana 2, Norriss. Simi Valley Tournament
Championship Quarterfinals

Moorpark 56, Rio Mesa 42-- Shawn Fortman scored 16 points and teammate Blake Sharpe added 12 to help Moorpark High defeat Rio Mesa of Oxnard 56-42 in the quarterfinals of the Simi Valley boys' basketball tournament Wednesday night at Simi Valley High.  The Musketeers (2-0) will play Marmonte League rival and tournament host Simi Valley in the semifinals Friday at 8 p.m.  Keith Lawrence (his name is "Kevin" in the Times)  contributed 10 points and Koorosh Adibzadeh had eight rebounds as Moorpark (2-0) limited the Spartans (1-1) to five points in the second quarter to take a 26-17 halftime lead. Daniel Bednar had 13 points for Rio Mesa, which was unable to overcome a 10-4 run by the Musketeers at the start of the third quarter, when Moorpark led by as many as 17 points. Moorpark (coached by Daniel Bednar's father) used a decisive 14-2 spurt near the end of the first half to begin the season unbeaten at 2-0.  Trailing 12-11, Moorpark embarked on a 14-2 run that gave it control for good.  Chris Willis started the spurt with a pair of baskets, and Ryan Fitzwater added two field goals.

Simi Valley 61, Hueneme 47-- K.C.Bellefontaine scored 17 points to help Simi Valley post a 61-47 victory over Hueneme in the quarterfinals.   Simi Valley, the seven-time defending champion, moves into the semifinals for the eighth consecutive year.  It will play Marmonte League rival Moorpark beginning at 8 p.m. on Friday.   John Schock finished with nine points. Micah Forches scored 11 points for Hueneme.

Camarillo 64, Royal 55--Camarillo High came out sluggish in the first quarter, falling behind by as many as 10 points, before rallying in the second quarter to take a 64-55 victory over Royal on Wednesday night in the quarterfinal round of the 17th annual Simi Valley Tipoff Classic at Camarillo High. Camarillo (2-0) will face Taft in the semifinal on Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Simi Valley High.  Royal (1-1) takes on Littlerock tonight at 6:30 at Simi Valley in consolation play. Royal forward Joel Hendershot checked in with 11 points to lead his team, but was relegated to the perimeter due to Reichel's inside presence. Hendershot was 5 of 13 from the field, a poor shooting night that plagued his entire team. Royal shot just 36 percent (21 for 57) for the game.

Taft 72, Littlerock 66--Despite missing three key players -- Steve Smith, Chris Catoe and Lance Broadus -- who are with the football team, the Toreadors of Woodland Hills beat the Lobos (1-2) in a quarterfinal game. After trailing by 10 points in the third quarter, Littlerock used a 15-4 run to take a 58-57 lead. Mike Creel keyed the run with eight points. However, Taft went on an 11-2 run late in the fourth quarter and never looked back. Nima Javaherian hit a 3-pointer to brake a 59-59 tie and the Toreadors never trailed again.

Consolation quarterfinals

Calabasas 61, Santa Paula 52--Michael Justman scored 16 points and was one of three Coyotes (1-1) to score in double figures in the victory over the Cardinals (0-2). Teammates Steve Saunders and Adam Malatesta scored 13 and 10 points, respectively, for Calabasas.  John Ramirez led Santa Paula with 11 points, and Alex Rico finished with 10 points.

Santa Clara 73, Alemany 51--Alex Ingram scored 14 points, but the Indians of Mission Hills (0-2) were outscored in every quarter in a loss to the Saints (1-1) in a consolation game.  Anthony Marquez and Alex Minney each scored 18 points as Santa Clara rebounded from its first-round defeat with a solid win in the consolation bracket.  Santa Clara rolled up a 36-20 lead at halftime to take command.  Tim LaJoie added nine points for the Saints (1-1).

Newbury Park 75, Ventura 40 --Chris Nooney and Chris Randall scored 15 points apiece to lead Newbury Park to the consolation victory.  Newbury Park (1-1) will face Monroe tonight at 6:30 at Camarillo High.  Rudy Flores scored 14 points and hit four of Newbury Park's 11 3-pointers. Newbury Park jumped out to a 28-13 lead after one quarter and went into the half with a 49-23 lead.

Game 1:  Riverside MLK 87, Ocean View 73 --Marvin Lea scored nine of his 35 points in the fourth quarter as Riverside King pulled away to a victory at the Glendora Triple Crown Challenge one-day tournament. Down a point at halftime, King trailed by 12 points midway through the third quarter. The Wolves used full-court pressure to wear down Huntington Beach Oceanview and take control late. Matt Sargeant scored 17 points for Ocean View in the season opener at Glendora High. Oceanview (0-1) -- Clark 5, Okwadibonge 2, Hatch 15, Carter 12, Sargent 17, Wurtz 9, Gallardo 4, Kreymer 2, Wilson 5. Game 2:  Mater Dei 80, Claremont 60--Mike Strawberry had 32 points and eight rebounds for Mater Dei in the season opener at Glendora High. Teammate Marcel Jones had 17 points and eight rebounds and freshman point guard Mike Garrity had nine assists as the Monarchs (1-0) defeated the host Wolfpack (0-1).  The Monarchs played without 6'-9" junior Harrison Schaen who is recuperating from a foot injury.

Arcadia 87, Maranatha 62--Brent Dohling scored 31 points for Arcadia (1-0), and Donte Owens added 20 to lead the Apaches over the Minutemen in their season opener. The loss dropped Maranatha to 1-1.

Bellflower 73, California 50--Michael Hubbard scored 20 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead all scorers for Bellflower (1-0). Ruben Castro added 16 points with five steals and six assists in the win at California (0-1).

El Toro 53, Los Alamitos 42 --Darryl Best had 16 points and Patrick Carney had 15 for visiting El Toro (2-0).

Estancia 71, Santa Ana 57--Micah Young had 26 points and Joey Lindquist had 14 for host Estancia. Jerry Cervantes led Santa Ana with 17 points.

Lompoc 64, Santa Barbara 55 --The Dons' season-opener was marred by a serious injury.  Lompoc's Joel Smith was taken to the hospital after hitting his head on the SBHS' floor at the end of a dunk shot early in the second half. Smith stole the ball and went for a slam. He pulled himself up on the rim and his feet went out from underneath him. He fell onto his back and his head landed directly on the floor, knocking him unconscious. He started convulsing while knocked out on the floor.   An ambulance arrived and took him to the hospital. "It was the worst incident I have seen in my 17 years of coaching," said Santa Barbara coach Jeff Lavender. "We didn't play well at all. They outplayed us."  Smith had 16 points while Taylor Rochestie topped Santa Barbara with 19.  Lompoc --Smith 16, Hilley 5, Starks 2, English 19, Linwood 18, Adams 2. Los Altos 98, Santa Fe 85--Anthony Garcia scored 29 points and Dylan Rogers added 21 to lead Los Altos (1-0). Robert Ruiz scored 26 and Duke Rivera added 24 for Santa Fe (0-1) in the loss.  Rogers had four 3-pointers and Glenn Phillips added another 17 for Los Altos, which was 35-of-45 from the free-throw line.

Mesrobian 54, Agbu 42 --Tiggy Grigoryan scored 15 points to lead Mesrobian (1-0) at AGBU (0-1).

Muir 65, Verbum Dei 61 --Richard Chaney scored 27 points for Verbum Dei (0-1) but that wasn't enough as Muir held on. Seth Davis grabbed 14 rebounds and scored 12 points for Muir (1-0).

Ribet Academy 69, Bell-Jeff 47 --Yancy Clark scored 22 points for Ribet Academy (1-0).

St. Joseph Santa Maria 50, Templeton 32 --Stewart Kussler, a 6-3 sophomore, had a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds and sophomore Joe Tilley added 12 points as the Knights posted a nonleague victory at Templeton. St. Joseph (2-0) blanked Templeton in the first quarter, 12-0 on the way to a 26-13 halftime advantage.

Western 65, Westminster La Quinta 50 -- Joshua Winningham had 18 points and eight rebounds for visiting Western (1-0).
