The 17th Annual Simi Valley Tipoff Classic will get underway at the end of the month, and will mark the opening games for most of the teams in the tournament (first games for CIF-SS teams can take place on Nov. 26). This year's field is about the most evenly balanced we can remember seeing in the tournament in a long time, with no real clear favorite going into the tournament and the first time we can recall in years that Simi has not been one of the top seeds. Instead the top two seeded teams appear to be Taft with junior Steve Smith and senior Mustafa Asghari, and Santa Clara with. . . . well it appears to be Santa Clara, and right now we have no idea who they have returning, unless of course the other top seed is intended to be Hueneme. In any event, with no clear favorite having talent that clearly dominates the competition, this does indeed appear to be a very evenly balanced tournament.
