Lompoc's Joel Smith Seriously
Injured In Season Opener--(Nov. 29, 2001)
According to a report in today's Santa Barbara News-Press, Lompoc's Joel Smith (6'-7" Sr. F) was seriously injured in Lompoc's game last night against Santa Barbara. Here's how the paper described what happened:
Lompoc's Joel Smith was taken to the hospital after hitting his head on the SBHS' floor at the end of a dunk shot early in the second half. Smith stole the ball and went for a slam. He pulled himself up on the rim and his feet went out from underneath him. He fell onto his back and his head landed directly on the floor, knocking him unconscious. He started convulsing while knocked out on the floor. An ambulance arrived and took him to the hospital. "It was the worst incident I have seen in my 17 years of coaching," said Santa Barbara coach Jeff Lavender.
We have not received any word on Joel's current condition, but wish him well and hope he's fully recovered.
