We've mentioned the Triple Crown Challenge before, but as a last minute reminder, here it is again.  And by the way, this is NOT a tournament (that's why our header calls it an "event" not a tournament), so for those who insist on referring to it as such, it's not....What the Triple Crown Challenge consists of is three games featuring six teams. A one-time showdown, with no second chances, no brackets, no "consolation" games.  Lose and you're done.   Win and you're done, except that it's a lot more fun to win.....

One of our friends who is working at organizing this event sent us a "press release" for the Triple Crown that the organizers have been handing out to the local papers, and our friend asked us to pass it along.   We're happy to do it.  Here's the story:

Top teams to compete in 4th Annual Triple Crown Challenge

Six top Basketball teams in the CIF Southern Section are slated to open their seasons in the 4th Annual Glendora High Triple Crown Challenge on November 28 at Glendora High School.

The first game pits Ocean View from Huntington Beach against Martin Luther King from Riverside. Ocean View went 22-7 and won the Golden West League last year. They lost to Mayfair in the semi-finals of IIA playoffs. King shared the championship of the Sunkist League last year going 20-8 finally losing to San Dimas in the IIIAA quarterfinals. King returns top scorers Leon Rosborough and Marvin Lea.

The second game is a rematch of last years CIF 1A semi-final between Mater Dei of Santa Ana and Claremont, won by Mater Dei 85-61. Mater Dei went on to win the CIF 1A and State Division I titles. Mater Dei lost a number of top players to graduation, including Cedric Bozeman to UCLA and Jamal Sampson to Cal, but still returns a talented and experienced team led by Mike Strawberry and 6-8 Harrison Schaen. Claremont returns All CIF 1st Team Shaddean Aaron and is bolstered by the transfers of Cameron Munoz from Ontario and Kenny Penn from Las Vegas.

The last game of the evening will see the Tartans of Glendora take on the Rebels of Quartz Hill. Glendora won the CIF 1AA title last year posing an overall 27-5 record. Glendora returns three starters: Spencer Foster. Mike Mehanna, and Larry Monroe and is expected to be in the hunt for Baseline League and CIF titles this season. Quartz Hill from the high desert was 17-7 last season, good for second place in the Golden League. Quartz Hill was upset 65-64 by Camarillo in the first round of the CIF 1AA playoffs but was without returning guard Mychael Williams,  their second leading scorer.

Game times are 5PM, 6:30PM, and 8PM. One ticket is good for the entire evening. Glendora High School is located at 1600 Footbill Blvd in Glendora. Call (626) 963-5731, extension 276 for more information.

See you there.
