Big West: Utah State Signs
Cobberly To NLI--(Nov. 15, 2001)

Several times a year we get a chance to look at Utah State, a member of the Big West Conference, when they come down here to compete against other schools in the conference like UCSB, UCI, Riverside, Cal Poly, Long Beach State, Fullerton and CSUN, so we'll also report on all the signings in the conference as they occur.  While there were a lot of verbals commitments taking place in the Big West Conference since the summer, there were not a lot of signings announced yesterday.   In fact, Utah State was one of the few schools in the conference which had anything to announce yesterday.  We'll pick up the other schools' announcements as they occur, but in the meantime, here's the official press release from Utah State:

Men's Basketball Inks Prep Star
Steve Cobbley is in his senior season at Highland High School in Pocatello, Idaho

Nov. 14, 2001

LOGAN, Utah - Utah State's head basketball coach Stew Morrill announced today the signing of Steve Cobbley to a national letter of intent to compete for the Aggies beginning in the 2002-03 season. The 6-10, 215-pound center is in his senior year at Highland High School in Pocatello, Idaho.

Cobbley averaged 15 points and 8.8 rebounds per game as a junior leading his team to a 16-13 record. He shot 70 percent from the free throw line and 55 percent from the field last season.

"We are delighted to have Steve Cobbley joining our program," said USU head coach Stew Morrill. "Steve is a quality player who has an excellent upside. With hard work and natural maturity, Steve can have a very good college career. He is extremely active for a size player and has good hands and very good skills."

Along with his accolades on the basketball court, Cobbley has also had tremendous success in the classroom as he has been a member of the honor roll in each of his three years at Highland High School.

"Steve resembles the type of high character individuals that we want representing Utah State University. He will fit in very well with our current players."

Cobbley, who is rated as the best "Big Man" in the west by Networx Basketball Scouting Services picked Utah State over BYU, Washington State, Gonzaga and Idaho State.
