Omar Weaver Will Sign NLI Today
With Fresno State--(Nov. 21, 2001)

If you want to get dialed in to Fresno State recruiting, just ask Eric Prisbell, who covers the Dogs for the Fresno Bee.  Today, Eric wrote a very interesting piece on Omar Weaver (6'-7" F) who is now at Riverside City College, and who was at Compton Centennial a few years ago.  According to Prisbell's report, Weaver will sign a National Letter of Intent today, which is the last day of the early signing period for basketball.  The next signing period begins April 10, 2002 and extends through May 15, 2002 (a much longer period, giving coaches and players a more extended period to fill out the roster spots still available across the country).  Here's the article on Eric, which is also available at the Fresno Bee's own website (and which contains other news related to Fresno State men's basketball, all of which you can read simply clicking on the headline below):

NEW YORK -- Omar Weaver, a talented Riverside City College shooting guard,  said he will adhere to his oral commitment and sign a binding letter-of-intent to attend Fresno State today, the final day of the early  signing period.

Weaver has said he would sign only if he knew Jerry Tarkanian would return as  coach or if a current member of the staff would assume the position next  season. After badgering Tarkanian on the topic in phone conversations, Weaver got his answer.

"He told me he was coming back next year," Weaver said Tuesday afternoon.

Tarkanian is prohibited by NCAA rules from commenting on an unsigned recruit.

When asked about his future Tuesday, Tarkanian told The Bee he would return if he remains healthy.

Oakland Tech's Armando Surratt, who signed with Fresno State last weekend, joins Weaver in what could be a stellar recruiting class for the Bulldogs.  Fresno State expects to add two more players to the class in the spring, when they look for signatures from Inglewood High's DeAngelo Collins and Long Beach City's Les Norman.

Weaver is averaging 20 points and 12 rebounds for his 5-1 team. The 6-foot-7 guard was rated among the top 20 players coming out of Compton's Centennial High.

"I haven't signed yet," Weaver said. "But I'll sign [today]. I'll only come if Tark is there. If he is not, I'm not coming."
