This tournament isn't exactly what we'd call adidas' answer to the Academy National Invitational, but it is sponsored by the Nike competitor and features several top teams from around the country, including some very talented upper and underclassmen. Among the teams playing in the tournamnent this year will be Washington Union from Fresno (actually Von Webb's team is from Easton, which is just outside Fresno, but you get the idea).
Washington Union doesn't have a Deshawn Stevenson-type of player this year (but then who does?--well, ok, St. Vincent-St. Mary's from Ohio does, with Labron James, but they're at the Slam Dunk to the Beach....)
Washington Union does have some talent though. Coached by Von Webb, who returned last year after a stint as an assistant at Wyoming, brings the Panthers to their third Kingdom USA tourament. The Panthers are led by a pair of transfers to the school, including 63" senior Joavance Coleman who came in from Fresno Hoover where he averaged 23 ppg and 8 rpg last year, and 6-6 junior Kinon Gooch from Ontario, Canada, who averaged 21 ppg. Washington Union also has 6-1 senior Marvin Carraway, 64 senior Dale Graham and 63 sophomore Dwight ONeil.
We don't know a lot about the other teams in this event, but you can check out the tournament website for all the team profiles, brackets, and schedules. Washington Union's first game will be played on Wednesday, December 26, 2001 at 10:00 a.m. EST (that's 7:00 a.m. Fresno time for those who are chronologically challenged), which is a very interesting time to make your No. 1 tournament seed play their first game.....Again, if you're an early riser, you can listen to the game live, courtesy of Broadcastmonsters.com. Just click this link to listen (you'll need to install an appropriate media player, either Windows Media Player or Real Player, or something else that can handle streaming audio).
