The 6-foot-5 senior scored 41 points, including six in the final 1 minute, 31 seconds, as the Golden Eagles held off and impressive Garces squad 97-92 at Clovis West. It was Clovis West's fourth straight BCW championship, and it looked like it might come easily against the Division 4 Rams. The Eagles led 62-44 with 5:44 left in the third quarter. Even after Garces rallied, Clovis came back for an 83-69 lead with six minutes left in the game. But junior point guard Kyle Shiloh led the Rams on a furios rally, scoring 13 of his team-high 26 points thereafter. Shiloh scored seven straight as Garces closed to 83-78 with 4:18 left. With 2:03 left, a Shiloh basket pulled the Rams to within 91-88. Then Debban got a basket on a goaltending call. With 1:16 left, Shiloh scored again, but with 43 seconds left, Debban, the tournament MVP, made two free throws to make it 95-90. Then Shiloh drove inside for a basket and was fouled with 35 seconds left. He missed the free throw, and Debban grabbed the rebound. The Eagles worked to keep the ball in Debban's hands. With 28 seconds, Debban missed a free throw. With 26 seconds, teammate Tyson Parker missed one. Garces 7-foot sophomore Robert Swift grabbed the rebound and passed off. Tyler Hair attempted a 3-pointer from the right corner, but Brian Thurman blocked the shot, and Debban grabbed the loose ball. Debban then made one of two free throws with 18 seconds and another one with eight seconds. Garces kept it close in the first quarter, but the Eagles started pulling away in the second quarter, during which Anthony Esparza of Garces and Clovis West's Trent Thompson put on a 3-point shooting display. Esparza was 4 for 5 in the quarter and scored 16 of his 21 points. Thompson, a reserve, made 3 of 4 3-pointers and scoed 12 of his 18 points in the quarter. Debban had eight points as Clovis West, which made 7 of 10 second-quarter 3-pointers, took a 54-40 lead. Despite nine third-quarter points from Shiloh, the Rams were unable to cut the deficit until the furious fourth quarter. Esparza finished with 21 points. Ryan had 16 and Swift scored 14. Redondo Union Pacific Shores Tournament
(Southern Section)
Championship
Fairfax 67, Redondo 57-- Redondo Beach played its hot hand in the final of the 50th
annual Redondo Beach Pacific Shores basketball tournament, but it still wasn't enough to
overcome a deep Fairfax team, as the Sea Hawks fell, 67-57. Wendell White scored 30
points on 12-for-20 shooting, single-handedly keeping Redondo (2-1) in the game. White
scored 12 points during a 16-6 Redondo run that brought the Sea Hawks within 52-50, with
5:22 left. Jahsha Bluntt responded with a 3-pointer for Fairfax, though, to widen the gap
and Redondo never got as close again. Fairfax had raced to an early 11-2 lead on
back-to-back 3-pointers by Bluntt and Alex Bausley. White, guard Keith Ellison, and Zahn
scored the next nine points for Redondo, including a 3-pointer by White that tied the
game, 11-11, with 1:25 left in the first quarter. The spurt was the start of what would
become a pattern for Redondo during the game score in bunches and then go cold.
Fairfax went on a 10-0 run to close the first and start the second before Redondo's
duo of White and Ellison got hot again. Ellison scored six points and White another five,
but a basket by Thomas Woods of Fairfax increased their lead to 30-22. Despite shooting 50
percent in the first half and limiting Fairfax to only 39 percent, the Sea Hawks were
down, 36-28. Fairfax attempted 10 more shots and hit seven 3-pointers.
