The official CIF season is underway.   As we've done in year's past, we will continue to pass along scores and game details where they are available and can be obtained either from those who send them to us or from the local papers.  If you know of a game that we missed, a score unreported, send it in along with whatever details you know about.

CIF-Southern Section League Games, Monday, 12/17/01

Arrowhead League

La Sierra Academy 60, Sherman Indian 56 --La Sierra Academy's bench came to the rescue in the fourth quarter, as Edson Verde scored all 10 of his points in the quarter, and Jean Pierre Bullon scored seven of his 14 in the final frame as well, to give La Sierra Academy an Arrowhead League victory. La Sierra Academy (2-0, 5-4) -- Paschal 4, Negroni 0, Moya 4, Gutierrez 4, Barber 12, Bullon 14, Verde 10, Trinidad 3, Mendoza 4, Beardon 5. Liberty League

Yeshiva 65, Providence 52-- Yeshiva jumped out to an early 15-8 first quarter lead and then went on an unanswered scoring run of 15 straight points to close out the first half with a score of 37-18, and Providence never recovered on its home court, dropping the league opener.

Metro League

Upland Christian 84, Cornerstone Christian 47--Nick Roberds scored 32 points and Jake Garcia added 18 points for Upland Chrsitian (6-2, 2-0).

Mission League

Chaminade 69, Alemany 44 --Jon Todd had 15 points and Josh Jones had 16 rebounds to lead Chaminade (6-1l, 1-0). CIF-Southern Section Non-League Games, Monday, 12/17/01

Aquinas 80, Mesa Grande 30--Jermain Harris had 28 points, 19 in the first quarter, for Aquinas (5-3).

Bosco Tech 71, Salesian 39--The Bosco Tech Tigers improved to 9-4 on the season with the win. Twelve different players scored for Bosco Tech, led by Anthony Lino's 14 points.

Boys' Republic 68, CEDU 57 --John Flanagan scored 24 points and Jamaal Magee added 18 points for Boys' Republic (4-1). CEDU ( 2-3).

Buena 77, Santa Paula 67 --Senior forward Chris Jacobsen scored 17 points and pulled down 13 rebounds to lead the Buena High boys' basketball team to a 77-67 non-league victory over host Santa Paula on Monday night.   Ben Henggeler and Hylas Smith added 11 points apiece for Buena (7-3) while Asa Haggy and Eric Gray had 10 each. Carlos Mendez scored 20 points for Santa Paula (4-4), including five 3-pointers. Ernesto Lopez and Joe Mata added 18 and 11 points, respectively.

Burbank 56, Calabasas 48-- Burbank (5-1) was led by Trenton Cleveland's 37 points, while Jason Flowers was held to just 5.  Calabasas (6-3) had three players in double figures (Steve Saunders 14, JUason Saunders 14, and Adam Malatesta 11) but it wasn't enough as the Coyotes fell.

Calvary Baptist 51, Redlands Junior Academy 49--details not available.

Chino 58, Montclair 56 --Aaron Marcey hit a three-point basket to give host Chino(5-4) a, 56-55, lead with one minute remaining. Tjayi Malone made two free throws with 12 seconds left to help preserve the victory. Junior guard Robert White had 26 points to lead Chino.

Crescenta Valley 74, Burbank Burroughs 58 --Jimmy Goffredo scored 20 points and Brendan Couper and Rusty Rivera each had eight rebounds to lead Crescenta Valley (8-2).  CV 22 18 21 13 -- 74 Burroughs 14 9 20 17 -- 58 CV -- Goffredo 20, Tarne 13 and 9 assists, Luansing 12 and 3 steals, Kang 10 and 7 rebounds, Rivera 10 and 7 rebounds, Couper 8 and 5 assists, Moradian 1. Price 75, Pacific Hills 52 --Kalief Washington had 18 points to lead host Price (8-2). Price had 3 players score in double figures as Oscar Edwards finished with 14 and Derrick Williams had 10. Price--19 17 22 17--75; Pacific Hills 11 15 13 13--52.  Pacific Hills' leading scorer was Amahl Amedu with 22.

Riverside Poly 71, Norte Vista 39 --Jeremy Lopez scored 12 points in the first quarter to help boost Riverside Poly to a 21-6 lead en route to a non-league victory over Riverside Norte Vista Norte Vista -- Rene 11, Flores 3, Sio 10, Peccigen 4, Robinson 5, Herbbert 2, Odem 4.  Poly (7-3) -- Renneisen 19, Kipper 2, Tillery 6, Bash 8, Daniel 6, Lopez 26, LeDuc 2, Vonalt 2. Saugus 81, Highland 77 --Adrian BuenCamino led Saugus with 22 points. Tre Peters had 19 for Highland in the loss and Mike Stevenson added 18.   Highland is 4-4, Saugus 5-5.

Temescal Canyon 52, Norco 47--Josh Garrett had 15 points and five assists and Matt Twamley had 14 points and 10 rebounds for visiting Temescal Canyon (6-4).  After a first half in which Norco missed 15 layups, the Cougars clawed back to within two points with under a minute left in the game. Norco missed a layup, and Lake Elsinore Temescal Canyon guard Mike Peterson was able to capitalize, converting two free throws on the next possession and clinching a non-league victory. Thousand Oaks 70, Channel Islands 58 --Ben Olson scored 20 points while Dave Anderson and Chad Acerboni added 15 apiece for Thousand Oaks (5-1)  Channel Islands  was led by Anthony Avila who scored 15 points and Eric Diaz with 12.

Valencia 55, Ventura 53 (OT) --Ventura (0-7) remained winless with the loss at Valencia.  Freshman Colin Campbell scored 20 points while Matt Dixon added 12, including a 3-pointer to send the game into overtime. Valencia is (5-7).

Valley Torah 64, St. Genevieve 53 --Yossi Goldman scored 23 points and had 14 rebounds to lead Valley Torah (5-2). Yair Katz had 21 points and 15 rebounds for Valley Torah.

Valley View 65, La Quinta 49 -- Xavier Rogers scored his 15 points in the second half to help boost Moreno Valley Valley View past La Quinta in a non-league game. Marcus Slaughter had 15 points and nine rebounds for Valley View. La Quinta (3-6) -- Matthews 0, Dowd 13, St. Angelo 23, Broght 4, Ahmad 0, Mazik 2, Lopez 5, Beavers 2. Valley View (3-5) -- Kalapaca 0, Rogers 15, White 11, Slaughter 15, Overton 4, Nwigwe 2, Castillo 11, Barrett 7.  Halftime score -- Valley View 31, La Quinta 27. Westlake 75, Serra 69 --P.J. Isaacson scored 24 points to lead Westlake (6-4) at Serra (9-2). Amir Mazarei added 12 points for Westlake, which never surrendered the lead after going ahead 14-13 in the first quarter. Eugene Jeter had 25 points, including three 3-pointers, four assists and three steals, but Serra trailed most of the game. Teammate Chris Hemphill scored 17 points and had six rebounds and four steals.

Whitewater 66, Desert Chapel 49 --Lewis Haywood scored 20 points and had 10 rebounds and Damien Poss had 10 rebounds for Whitewater in a non-league victory over Palm Springs Desert Chapel.. Whitewater (8-0) -- Johnson 12, Haywood 20, Gebremichael 9, Poss 8, Coleman 17. Desert Chapel (5-2) -- P. Hackbarth 6, Goodman 2, Donaldson 2, Hernandez 4, Law 19, J. Hackbarth  3, Richie 7, Sloan 6. Yucaipa 64, Kaiser 61 --Down by one with 22 seconds left, Thad Orr hit a three-pointer to put Yucaipa ahead, then he went to the line and sank 1 of 2 free throws to seal the victory over Fontana Kaiser in a non-league game. Yucaipa junior forward Matt Brown had 18 points and 11 rebounds. Maldonado also grabbed nine rebounds for the Eagles (4-4). Zack Novak hit two free throws with six seconds left in the game to seal the victory for Estancia. Daniel Figueroa scored 20   Daniel Dingman (15 points) and Lucas Macauley (14 points) each had 10 rebounds for Verdugo Hills, which had 57 total rebounds. Luis Valle and Ramon Perry led the Tigers with 11 points apiece.

St. Francis 74, Flintridge Prep 45--Chris Miller scored 23 points and six rebounds to lead St. Francis (2-1).  Junior Mike Miller had 10 and Tim Mercer scored 6 and 10 rebounds for Flintridge Prep Flintridge Prep is 1-3. Bishop Montgomery 61, Moorpark 43 -- Fred Washington approached a triple-double with 21 points, eight assists and seven rebounds for the Knights (4-2). Gavin Lee added 17 points, six rebounds and five assists and Brandon Peace scored 10 points. Bishop Montgomery picked up the defense in the second half and held Moorpark (6-2) to just two field goals in the fourth quarter. The Knights outscored Moorpark, 21-7, in the final period.

 


Orangewood Academy Tournament

Murrieta Calvary Chapel 77, Orangewood 32 --Senior guards Ryan Evans and Luke Wilkerson teamed for 24 third-quarter points as Murrieta Calvary Chapel pulled away to win a pool-play game at the Holiday Hoopla Tournament in Garden Grove. Calvary Chapel outscored Orangewood 30-7 in the quarter to take a 27-point lead. Calvary Chapel faces Sylmar First Lutheran next. Stoneridge Prep 80, Fairmont Prep JV 49 --James Spencer scored 27 points for Stoneridge Prep (7-3). Spencer, a 6-foot-3 junior, led with five of the team's 24 steals. The Tigers, who play Orangewood next, raced out to a   32-11 first-quarter lead when Spencer scored 15 points in the quarter. Leon Usher and Mike Nang each scored 14 points for Stoneridge Prep.
