Carlsbad La Costa Canyon Tournament
Championship
La Costa Canyon 69, Carlsbad 61-- [From the San Diego Union Tribune]: La Costa Canyon, picked no better than a distant fourth behind preseason Top 10-ranked league rivals Carlsbad, El Camino and Fallbrook, surprised No. 2 Carlsbad last night with a 69-61 win in the final of the sixth annual Holiday Hoop Invitational at Carlsbad's gym. Avocado favorite Carlsbad (10-2) struggled with its shooting touch and turnovers from the opening tip and trailed 33-31 at halftime. The Lancers seemed to right themselves in the third quarter when USD-bound Derek Stockalper, a 6-foot-5 senior guard-forward, scored 10 unanswered points to forge a 43-36 lead for Carlsbad with 3:50 left in the period. Although Stockalper's shooting touch was off, he finished with a game-high 26 points with 13-of-14 free throws. His accuracy from the line included converting three three-point plays and three straight free throws when he was fouled on a three-point field-goal attempt. But unranked La Costa Canyon (9-2) didn't fold under the pressure of Carlsbad's comeback. The Mavericks scored the final eight points of the third period -- including two three-pointers from all-tournament selections Pat McDonough (eight points) and E.T. Demkiw (five points) -- for a 44-43 lead. LCC never trailed again. Another key was McDonough, a 6-foot-1 senior who held Carlsbad senior point guard Greg Nelson to 10 points. In addition to Delaney, three other Mavericks in double figures were 6-7 senior Drew Budinger (19), 6-8 senior Owen Olson (10) and 6-4 senior Lance Dyer (10). Olson and Dyer scored their combined 20 points off the bench. Carlsbad, El Camino and Fallbrook all feature big men, so the Mavericks will need production inside to compete for the league title. In addition to Budinger and Olson, 6-5 junior starter Kevin O'Connell finished with five points. Ironically, LCC won its own tournament, even though the final was in Carlsbad's gym. LCC and Carlsbad are now considered co-hosts of the tournament and the schedule set in advance called for the final at Carlsbad's gym. Carlsbad's only other loss was to Santa Ana Mater Dei. City Of Palms Classic (Ft. Meyers, Florida)
Westchester 68, All Hallows (Bronx, NY) 54-- In a championship game that seemed like a near repeat of last years, Westchester (9-0) again faced a tough, nationally ranked opponent from the Bronx. Once again, Westchester had to withstand a guard with a penchant for 3-point shooting. And once again, Westchester won. Living up to high expectations as the top-ranked team in USA Todays Super 25, Westchester defeated No. 16 All Hallows 68-54 a year after defeating St. Raymonds for the Bank of America City of Palms Classic championship. Playing in front of a capacity crowd of 2,200 Saturday night at the Bishop Verot High School gymnasium, Westchester jumped to an 11-2 lead. Westchester junior forward Trevor Ariza was named the tournaments Most Valuable Player scored eight points with 10 rebounds. Westchester, which became the first team to repeat as Classic champions since the tournament expanded to a national format, improved to 9-0, while All Hallows fell to 4-3. The crowd included University of Florida coach Billy Donovan and Louisville coach Rick Pitino, who sat next to each other behind the west basket. Pitino once coached Donovan at Providence, and Donovan once served as an assistant to Pitino at Kentucky. They watched intently as, for the second year in a row, a Bronx guard rose to the occasion. Instead of having to defend current North Carolina State guard Julius Hodge of St. Raymonds like last year, Westchester had to contend with Ricky Soliver of All Hallows. Westchester senior Hassan Adams scored 15 points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds. Soliver scored 17 points in the first half and even completed a 4-point play when fouled on a 3-point attempt. But Westchester held Soliver to just two points in the second half. Five Westchester players scored at least eight points, led by Brandon Heaths 17. Keith Everage had 10 points, and Scott Cutley finished with nine as the Comets, the No. 1 team in USA Today's national rankings, stormed to a 21-10 advantage after one quarter over All Hallows, No. 18 in USA Today . Fresno Holiday Invitational Tournanent
Championship
Clovis 68, Fresno Hoover 33--Just when it seemed as though Clovis High's defensive pressure had peaked, the Cougars turned up their intensity to another level. Clovis forced 33 Hoover turnovers and won its first Holiday Invitational Tournament title with a 68-41 victory on Saturday at Sunnyside Gym. The HIT, which had a 16-team field, is in its 42nd year. Clovis forced the turnovers by creating a stealing lane for a freelance defender. Other times, the Patriots simply committed the turnover on their own by making wild passes or traveling. The Cougars defense overwhelmed the Patriots from the start. With help from seven Hoover turnovers, the Cougars led 11-0 after four minutes. By halftime, Clovis had forced Hoover into as many turnovers -- 20 -- as it had given up in points, leading 34-20. The Patriots kept it interesting through the end of the third quarter, but ran into more turnover problems in the fourth. Clovis started the final quarter with a 13-0 run and led by as many as 30 points. In fact, the Cougars held the Patriots scoreless for the first 3:22 of the quarter. Jon Black, the tournament's most valuable player, and Earl Warren each scored a game-high 14 points for Clovis. Teammate David Lange, who also made the all-tournament team, added 12. No Hoover player reached double figures.
Third Place
Madera 80, Monache 45-- Third place went to Madera, which received 21 points from all-tournament choice T.J. Aguilar in an 80-45 victory over Monache. After leading by 15 points at halftime, the Coyotes outscored the Marauders 45-25 in the second half. Madera held Monache forward Zack Craddock in check, limiting him to 15 points.

Garden Grove Tournament
Championship
Estancia 43, Western 42 -- Lewis Bradshaw converted a crucial three-point play with 0:41 left to key a 43-42 victory over Western in the championship game of the Garden Grove North County Shootout at Garden Grove High Saturday night. Bradshaw, a 6-foot-3 starting junior forward, scored a game-high 14 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, while tournament Most Valuable Player Fernando Maldonado contributed 12 points, as the Eagles (7-4) won their fifth straight game. Leading 39-38, the Eagles came out of a timeout with an inbounds play for Bradshaw, who worked to get himself open. Jorge Prado found Bradshaw underneath the basket, and he scored the bucket on the foul and made the subsequent free throw. Western (8-4), which also finished as runner-up in its own tournament two weeks ago, answered with a two-pointer. But Prado, who earned All-Tournament laurels, nailed a free throw with 0:22 left and the Eagles held on for the win. Prado struggled to find shooting rhythm throughout the game and instead dished off four assists in the second half. He found Maldonado, who put an easy layup for Estancia's first lead, 36-35 with 3:10 left, since leading, 13-11, with 1:35 left in the first half. Estancia was down by as many as nine points in the third quarter, but went on a 11-2 run. Prado capped the run, stealing the ball and finishing on the breakaway as he was fouled to tie the score at 26 with 1:54 left in the third. In the fourth quarter, after Maldonado gave Estancia the aforementioned 36-35 lead, Maldonado later grabbed an offensive rebound and dished an assist to senior Jermaine Snell, who hit a jumper for a 38-37 advantage with 2:23 left. Tournament MVP
Kevin "BJ" Bell, Fairfax
Tournament MOP
Evan Burns, Fairfax
Championship
Fairfax 43, Montrose Christian 40-- The Fairfax Lions made a case for a higher national ranking by defeating Montrose Christian (Rockville, Md.) 43-40 in the finals of the 18th Annual Iolani Prep Classic. Montrose Christian is No. 14 in USA Today's latest Super 25 rankings. Fairfax is absent from the Super 25 but is No. 7 in USA Today's West Region rankings. In earlier games, the top two Hawai'i teams in the tournament both fared well against tough Mainland competition. Fairfax's only loss this season was an 86-84 defeat to No. 1-ranked Westchester (Los Angeles) two weeks ago. To reach the Classic finals, the Lions defeated Roosevelt 90-50, Iolani 61-59 and Clovis West 80-64. The final was a fitting end to an exciting Classic. UCLA-bound Evan Burns scored on an alley-oop pass from Kevin Bell with 18 seconds remaining to give the Lions a 41-40 lead. Montrose Christian turned it over on the baseline with five seconds left. Burns was fouled on the ensuing inbounds play and sank both free throws to make it 43-40. Montrose Christian advanced the ball to halfcourt but threw it away on an inbounds pass. It's the second straight second-place Classic finish for the Mustangs, who lost to Northwestern in last year's final. Montrose Christian coach Stu Vetter has brought 14 teams to the Classic, winning six times. Bell, the tournament's Most Valuable Player, finished with 10 points to lead Fairfax. Burns was named Most Outstanding Player. Freshman point guard Eric Price led Montrose with nine points.
Third Place
Garfield (Seattle) 74, Clovis West (Fresno, Calif.) 68--Brandon
Roy scored 28 points and Marcelus Kemp added 19 points to lead the Bulldogs to a victory
in the third-place game. Nick Debban scored a game-high 33 points and Tyrese McDaniel
added 12
points for Clovis West.
Fifth Place
Iolani 61, Wilson (Florence, S.C.) 44--The Raiders (8-2) are believed to be the first Hawai'i team in the 18-year history of the Classic to beat three Mainland teams. Bobby Nash scored a game-high 17 points and Derrick Low added 14 points for Iolani, which jumped out to a 9-2 lead and led 29-15 at the half. Raymond Dorsey scored 16 points to lead Wilson, which never got closer than the halftime margin the rest of the game.
Seventh Place
Kalaheo 53, Northwestern (Miami) 51--A hobbled Kalaheo still was good enough to edge Northwestern (Miami) 53-51 for seventh place, and Iolani defeated Wilson (Florence, S.C.) 63-44 for fifth place. Kalaheo (11-2) won despite all-state guard DC Daniels sitting out because of a sprained ankle and starting point guard Shaine Harada out due to illness. Once the game started, point guard Zane Cabral suffered a yet-to-be diagnosed knee injury. The Mustangs can rest knowing they beat a Northwestern team that is expected to be a contender in Miami. The Bulls, who finished third in Florida's 6A championships last year but return no starters, presented a challenge for the Hawai'i teams. Kalaheo took the lead for good (50-49) with 1:33 remaining on a layup by Justin Pedrina. Michael Gayle's free throws made it 52-49 with 1:05 left, but Northwestern closed it to 52-51 on Cedrick McGowan's short jumper with seven ticks left. James Robinson sank a free throw with four seconds remaining to make it 53-51, and the Bulls' ensuing length-of-court pass was intercepted. Ikaika Alama-Francis led Kalaheo with 17 points and Gayle added 13 points. McGowan led Northwestern with 18 points and Jerrett Williams added 12 points. Daniels sprained his ankle in the championship game of the Big Island Candies tournament Dec. 15 in Hilo. He sat out the Iolani Classic opener against Kealakehe but played Thursday night against Montrose Christian. Daniels was held to five points in that game.

Tournament MVP
Lenny Collins, Santa Margarita
Santa Margarita 60, Woodbridge 48 --Despite no player taller than 6-4, Santa Margarita (11-0) won the Irvine tournament championship behind scrappy defense and exceptional senior leadership. Lenny Collins, the tournament MVP, scored nine of his 19 points in the fourth quarter when the Eagles outscored Woodbridge (9-2) 24-13. Brandon Rohe had 16 points and Travis Smith 10. Woodbridge received 18 points from Patrick Hadden along with 13 points and 10 rebounds from David Burgess. Santa Margarita twice put together spurts of 10-0 in the game. Woodbridge missed its first 11 shots but still came back to open up a seven point lead in the half. The Eagles made 9 of 10 field goals in the fourth quarter to turn their one-point lead at the start of the period into a 60-48 victory against the fourth-ranked Warriors in front of a tournament-record crowd of 1,544 at Concordia University. The Eagles (11-0) shot 28 percent through the first three quarters. But thanks to its fourth-quarter outburst, Santa Margarita finished at 40 percent to win the tournament in its first appearance. Lenny Collins, one of Santa Margarita's three Division I-bound guards, scored nine of his game-high 19 points in the fourth and took home the MVP award. Guard Jake Rohe also had a big fourth, scoring seven of his 16 points. Santa Margarita needed the outburst to put away a Woodbridge squad (9-2) that came back from the 10-0 deficit late in the first quarter to tie the score at 19 in the second and open a 32-25 lead with 3:06 left in the third. Santa Margarita also made its final shot of the third quarter as University of San Diego-bound guard Travis Smith (10 points) sank a three-pointer from the corner at the buzzer, giving the Eagles a 36-35 lead. Santa Margarita then scored the first seven points of the fourth. Santa Margarita, which gave away several inches to Woodbridge in some matchups, outrebounded the Warriors, 33-29. Smith, a 6-foot-3 senior, had a game-high nine rebounds. The Eagles' defense held Woodbridge to 33 percent shooting. Patrick Haddan led the Warriors with 18 points.
Third Place
Northwood 59, Cajon 57 --Drew Terry scored 19 points and was named to the all-tournament team as the Timberwolves (8-3) defeated the Cowboys (8-3) in the third-place game. Senior 6-3 forward Donovan Morris had a game-high 21 points and also grabbed seven rebounds, but Cajon fell to Northwood 59-57 on Saturday in the third-place game of the Irvine Tournament. Morris and Kris Silva were named to the all-tournament team. Sophomore 6-3 forward Tony Danridge (six rebounds) and senior 6-2 forward Andre Payne each added 12 points for the Cowboys (7-3), who led 29-27 at halftime. San Bernardino Cajon ran out of time and lost the third-place game of the Irvine Tournament. Cajon's Donovan Morris hit a three-pointer with two seconds to play to cut Irvine Northwood's lead to two points. The Cowboys then intercepted the inbounds pass but didn't have enough time to launch an effective shot before the game ended. Morris, who scored a tournament-high 91 points in four games, and Kris Silvas were named to the all-tournament team. Cajon plays Rim of the World at 4:45 p.m. Wednesday in the first round of the San Bernardino Kiwanis Tournament. Cajon (7-3) -- Morris 21, Clark 0, Silvas 0, Danridge 12, Payne 12, Lewis 6, Porter 6. La Canada Tournament
Tournament MVP
Jamal Hall, Muir
Championship
Muir 63, Bishop Montgomery 58 --Despite a sluggish first-half showing and undisciplined play down the stretch, Muir High School's boys basketball team kept its flawless record intact with a 63-58 victory over Bishop Montgomery in Saturday's championship game of the 11th Annual La Canada Holiday Classic at La Canada High. The Mustangs (11-0) made it closer than it should have been as they squandered most of a nine-point lead with 2:46 to play by inexplicably rushing shots -- rather than running the clock -- and saw Bishop Montgomery cut the deficit to three with 1:32 left. It was then that Muir's 6-foot-11 center, Ryan Hollins, fouled out and watched from the bench as Bishop Montgomery's Jason Estrada hit a pair of free throws to make it 59-56. But the Mustangs avoided wasting a stellar second-half showing by Hollins. Tournament MVP Jamaal Hall connected on two free throws in the final 92 seconds, and Chris Dickson and Owen Duckworth each sank one. Dickson's block of Marques Washington's perimeter jumper and Gavin Lee's hurried shot down the stretch stymied any comeback by the stubborn Knights (6-3). Although the first half was exciting for the fans -- the teams traded baskets, and neither squad led by more than four -- it was sloppy for the Mustangs. They had nine turnovers but held a 30-28 halftime advantage as eight players scored. Hollins, who finished with 18 points, 10 rebounds and four blocked shots, dominated in spurts during the second half. His two-handed stuff tied it, 34-34, with 6:32 left in the third, and he quickly followed that with a putback basket. That ignited a 13-minute stretch in which he scored 15 of the team's next 27 points, good enough to put Muir on top and earn him all-tournament honors. Fred Washington had 19 points and six assists, but fouled out with five minutes remaining as the Knights (6-3) were unable to defend their tournament title against Muir (11-0) in the third consecutive finals meeting between the two schools. Gavin Lee finished with 15 points and five rebounds for Bishop Montgomery, and Brandon Peace netted nine points.
Third Place
Moorpark 77, La Canada 73 --Keith Lawrence scored 15 points and sank a three-point shot with 22 seconds remaining that put Moorpark ahead, 75-70. Danny Nystrom added 15 points for Moorpark (7-3) and joined Lawrence on the all-tournament team. Joel Kim scored 21 points, including five three-point baskets, for La Canada (7-3). Billy Hofman had 13 points for La Canada and was named to the all-tournament team. Robbie Neyland had 17 points and Greg Gaudino 12 points for the host Spartans. Lawrence pulled the plug on a La Canada comeback by nailing a 3-point field goal with 22 seconds left to give Moorpark the win. Blake Sharpe had eight points, six rebounds, six assists and three steals.

87 points and 45 rebounds (34 of 66 from the field) for four games
Championship Game
Our Savior New American 55, Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas) 39--
Our Savior New American (N.Y.) opened the game with a 14-2
run, and Bishop Gorman scored just six points in the first 12:20 before losing to the
Pioneers 55-39 at Green Valley High. Our Savior (11-2) came out in a box-and-one
defense on Gorman star C.J. Watson, who was limited to a tournament-low 12 points.
Our Savior's four-man zone of 6-foot-9-inch Konimba Diarra, 6-8 Juan Palacios, 6-6
Oumar Sylla and 6-5 Gene Selimi dwarfed the Gaels. Gorman's tallest starter is 6-5 Mark
Hill, and the Gaels' tallest player is 6-6 Chris Mark. Gorman shot only 23.4 from
the floor. Our Savior took its biggest lead, 29-6, on a bucket by Palacios with 3:40 to go
in the first half. Gorman finished the half on a 12-2 run to pull within 13, thanks to
eight points by Watson. In the second half, it was more of the same as the Pioneers
led by as much as 19 at 43-24. Gorman again made a run, cutting the lead to nine on a free
throw by Cori Anderson with 3:19 to play, but could get no closer. Watson was
4-for-17 from the field, but none of the other Gorman starters fared much better. Brandon
Knott led the Gaels with 19 points and 10 rebounds, but he made just 8 of 23 shots. Hill
was 1-for-9, Robert Porter was 1-for-7 and Joe Anderson was 0-for-3. Palacios,

Fremont 72, Pleasure Ridge Park (Ky.) 69 --Shelvion Williams made a three-pointer at the buzzer to give Fremont (9-1) the victory. Terrell Powell had 19 points for Fremont.
Consolation Semifinals
Fremont 69, St. Benedict's (N.J.) 54 --Geoffrey Clayton had 21 points for Fremont.
Pleasure Ridge Park 62, Carson 55 --Ekene Ibekwe had 18 points, seven rebounds, two blocks and three steals, but the Colts (6-4) lost in the consolation game to the Panthers (9-2). Marques Washington , Bryan Harvey and Ray Reese each scored seven points. Reese also grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds. Maurice Blakey scored 20 points for Pleasure Park Ridge, which rallied from a 30-29 halftime deficit.
Louis Johnson (who is now back with the Long Beach Press Telegram after a stint with the Orange County Register and FoxSports.com) was at the tournament, and he wrote this in the P-T about the game and about Carson: " The Colts (6-4) had no answer for junior guard Maurice Blakey, who scored 13 of his game-high 20 points in the second half to lead the Panthers (9-2) to a Millennium Cup consolation semifinal victory. Pleasure Ridge Park opened the second half with a 10-2 spurt to grab a 41-32 lead, but Carson battled back behind forward Ekene Ibekwe (18 points, 7 rebounds, 2 blocks). The 6-8 junior's thunderous baseline dunk over 6-7 Brad Lightle - Ibekwe was also fouled on the play and sank the ensuing free throw - cut the Colts' deficit to 51-47 with six minutes to play. However, Carson would get no closer than three points the rest of the way, and the Panthers made 9 of 12 free throws in the final 90 seconds to seal the win. Despite finishing with a 1-2 record in the Millennium Cup bracket of the Holiday Prep Classic, it's pretty evident that Carson is on the verge of becoming a power among area basketball teams. The youthful Colts, who have just two seniors among their top eight or nine players, defeated one of California's better teams in San Jose Andrew Hill and gave Bonner Academy of Raleigh, N.C., and Louisville (Ky.) Pleasure Ridge Park all they could handle before suffering relatively close defeats. Junior forward Ekene Ibekwe is already the top boys basketball prospect in the area and Carson has a pair of future stars in freshmen forwards Bryan Harvey and Ray Reese. Given the talent on the team's roster, the inexperienced Colts would have likely been playing for a title if they were in one of the event's less-challenging draws instead of the Millennium Cup. Carson coach Richard Masson said he wanted his team to play the best the tournament had to offer. "You get better by playing the best teams because you can preach a little about fundamentals," Masson said. "You can get away with a lack of fundamentals against lesser teams, but against good teams, you'll get burned. As far as (going 1-2), that's OK. Sometimes, it's not important to win now. It's more important to xleg win later on."

Durango (Las Vegas) 84, Farrell (PA) 76-- At Durango, Steve Stowers had 20 points to lead the Trailblazers over the Steelers in the Millennium Cup consolation bracket. Halftime score - Farrell 36, Durango 33
Artesia 55, Andrew Hill (San Jose, CA) 46--Junior forward Kalelen Daniels' three-point play with three minutes gave the Pioneers the lead for good as Artesia rallied from being behind 9 points in the second half to beat the Falcons (6-4) in a Millennium Cup consolation game. KeJuan Johnson had 15 points, 6 assists, 5 steals and Terrence Henderson finished with 11 points, 8 rebounds. Ryan Meilleur had 10 points. According to Louis Johnson of the Long Beach Press Telegram, Ronald Allen barely played in the Saturday game due to a medical condition: " Artesia got a big scare in the first half of Friday night's game against Pleasure Ridge Park. Senior forward Ronald Allen, one of the Pioneers' top players, fainted at the foul line following a pair of free throw attempts. Allen, who suffers from bronchitis, apparently had some difficulty breathing and passed out after making the second of two free throws. The game was halted for 10 minutes as Allen gathered his senses while being attended to by Artesia coach Scott Pera and medical personnel on hand at Green Valley High. "I looked at him and said, 'Ronald, do you know you just made some free throws?' and he had no idea what I was talking about," Pera said. "He was fine once he made it back to the bench and settled down. But we weren't going to take a chance and play him anymore (in that game)." Allen suited up for the Pioneers' finale Saturday against San Jose Andrew Hill, but he played only two minutes in their 55-46 victory."LVHPC--Gold Cup Division Games--Second round |

15th Place
Canyon Anaheim 71, Santa Barbara 66 (OT) -- Despite losing every game in the tournament, Santa Barbara had a few bright spots, including the play of junior Santiago Aguirre who finished with 40 against Canyon, the highest single-game total a player has scored at Santa Barbara (5-7) in the past 17 years. Aguirre is 6'-5" and plays the post for his high school team but projects out as a wing guard at the college level. He finished 16-of-20 from the floor, 8-of-8 from the foul line and collected 13 rebounds. With the game tied and 10 seconds left in regulation, the Dons' Mike Fisher picked up a loose ball in the backcourt, dribbled to the frontcourt and got to the top of the key when an inadvertent shot-clock horn sounded. The horn signified that time had expired for Canyon in its previous possession. Instead of playing through the inadvertent horn an official blew the whistle and halted play. With two seconds remaining, and Santa Barbara in position to score, the referees blew the play dead, put 1.9 seconds back on the clock, and in the overtime, Canyon pulled out the win. Tournament MVP
Carmello Anthony, Oak Hill
Championship
Oak Hill 65, Churchill 35 --Oak Hill was led by Carmelo Anthony with 20 points. Oak Hill Academy was just too deep for any mere high school team. With 8 division I college prospects, and at least a couple bound for the pros, they were too tough for everyone here. The defending USA Today national champion from Mouth of Wilson, Va., beat Oregon's defending state champion, Churchill, 65-35 on Saturday in front of 5,248. Oak Hill, which also won the tournament in 1997, was methodical and sometimes brilliant as it dismantled the Lancers. Tournament most valuable player Carmello Anthony, a 6-foot-9 forward bound for Syracuse if he doesn't jump to the NBA, scored 20 points. Oak Hill shot 73.7 percent from the field. Churchill shot 37.8 percent from the field and got outrebounded 24-13. The Lancers' Jordan Kent (son of Oregon Coach Ernie Kent) who scored 34 points in a semifinal win over Jesuit, finished with nine against Oak Hill. Kent was named to the All-Tournament team as well. Starting guards Justin Gray and Chadd Moore were a combined 11 of 15 shooting. Moore turned two steals into breakaway dunks in the second quarter as the Warriors extended an early 11-8 lead to 31-16 by halftime.

Gold Division
Championship
Torrey Pines 68, Corona Centennial 51 --Avi Fogel sat on the bench as Torrey Pines High prepared to take on Southern Section power Corona Centennial in the championship basketball game of the 55th Kiwanis Tournament last night. But in a six-man starting rotation that was just fine, as the junior guard came off the bench to score a career-high 26 points (only 2 points in the first quarter) to lead Torrey Pines to an impressive 68-51 victory at Serra High. The Falcons improved to (9-0) with the win and look forward to hosting their own tournament next week. Torrey Pines never trailed the previously unbeaten Huskies, who had counted nationally ranked Santa Ana Mater Dei among their eight victims. The Falcons charged out to a 13-6 lead behind Ryan Neff, who scored seven of his eventual nine points in a two-minute span. Although Centennial rallied to trail by just one, the tempo was set. A 20-8 third-quarter spree gave Torrey Pines a 54-35 lead that never got smaller than 15 as the Falcons converted 9-of-11 free throws down the stretch to discourage the Huskies. Fogel had plenty of help as center Rod Benson collected 12 points, pulled down eight rebounds and was credited with four key blocked shots. Torrey Pines' leading rebounder was 6-foot-7 Josh Kramer with nine. Three Centennial players scored in double figures, led by 6-9 Lance Soderberg's 16. Torrey Pines outscored Centennial 20-8 in the third quarter to pull out a close game. Senior Lance Soderberg led Centennial with 16 points and J.R. Reese scored 14. Soderberg and Reese made the all-tournament team. The game quickly got away from the Huskies as Torrey Pines tallied the first nine points after halftime to push the lead to 43-27 in less than 2 1/2 minutes of the second half. The steady play of the Falcons kept Centennial from mounting any kind of rally. The biggest margin of the game was 22 points and the closest the Huskies could get was 15 at 59-44 with 5:53 left to play. But the Huskies hit a dry spell that lasted 3:40, and the Falcons tossed down seven unanswered points. In addition to Fogel, the Falcons got 12 points, six rebounds and eight blocked shots from Rod Benson along with nine points from Neff, eight points and eight rebounds from Josh Kramer and eight more points from Kyle Cech. Benson and Kramer were both named to the all-tournament team. J.R. Reese topped the Huskies, who made just 19 of 52 shots from the field, with 14 points. Centennial plays at the Orange Holiday Classic at Chapman University at 5:10 p.m. on Wednesday against Huntington Beach. Torrey Pines (9-0) -- Cech 8, Kramer 8, Neff 9, Fogel 26, Brull 5, Benson 12.
