Temple City 61, Whittier 56--Kevin Sweeney scored 27 for Temple City.  Temple City went on a second-quarter spree, built a comfortable lead and held off a late Whittier push to win the first-round game, 61-56.   The Rams led by just 18-17 early in the the second quarter, but some hot shooting by junior point guard Kevin Sweeney helped Temple City extend its lead. Sweeney scored seven of his team-high 27 points in the quarter and Greg Johnston and Desmond Reed each made 3-pointers to help the Rams lead, 35-23, at halftime.  Whittier junior forward Michael Hernandez, who torched the Rams for 12 of his game-high 28 points in the first quarter, was held to just two field goals in the quarter. In the third quarter, Whittier's crowd and defense turned up the intensity. Both were effective and seemed to make an impact, but Whittier (9-3) couldn't get on an extended run to effectively chip away at Temple City's lead. The teams' intensity turned into a trash-talking contest and hack-a-thon in the fourth quarter. It reached a low point late in the game when Whittier's Frank Galindo and Temple City's Theo Giannoulias were ejected after a brief shoving match. But the Rams made just enough free throws to keep the game in hand. Temple City (8-2) missed four of its first six in the quarter as Whittier drew within six. But the home team made 7-of-12 down the stretch to hold on.

First Round (Games listed in order they were played during the day)

Oxnard 76, Cabrillo (Lompoc) 30--details not reported.

East High (Salt Lake City, Utah) 66, Santa Ynez 43-- East faces Pasadena next. East High simply contained Santa Ynez' Matt McKinney who has signed with UCLA, and when no one else from Santa Ynez stepped up, East took over.   McKinney finished with 19 points, 4 below his average this season.  East constantly pressured the ball and made it hard for the Pirates to dump the ball into their 6-9 center. If the ball did get to him, several defenders were waiting and made him settle for low-percentage jump shots. On the offensive side of the ball, East was led by center Troy Randle, who matched McKinney with 19 points, and senior point gaurd Warith Saleem, who scored 14 points including four 3-pointers.  East was also helped by senior David Lowe and sophmore Jesse Stott who scored 14 and nine points, respectively. Mike Bebernes scored six points for the Pirates (4-6). EAST--Randall 19, Saleem 14, Lowe 12, Stott 9, Tolbert 6, Theodore 2, Larson 2, Sykes 2. Total 66. Dos Pueblos 80, Pt. Loma (San Diego) 69--Steve Graybill playing with a heavily taped left wrist, scored 27 points to lead the Chargers to an 80-69 victory over Point Loma in an opening-round game at the Santa Barbara Holiday Classic.  Dos Pueblos plays Oxnard next.  Graybill aggravated an old injury to his wrist last week and there was concern he might be out for the season. But he and the Chargers came out firing against Point Loma and they never let up. Guard Jon Pickert added 16 points and was a consistent threat from the outside, making five 3-pointers. Two were several feet behind the arc. Pickert's play helped take some of the defensive pressure off Graybill. After a first half in which Dos Pueblos built a 47-30 lead, the game became more physical, forcing the Chargers to alter their strategy.  The Chargers received several other standout contributions. Senior forward Kevin Iden had 11 points, many of them coming from rebounds and second-chance opportunities. Senior guard Ryan Glick scored nine points and center John Ramsdell added six points.  Gordon Brown led Point Loma with 14 points and C. J. Jordan added 12. The game had extra meaning for the Chargers as Point Loma team is coached by Dos Pueblos graduate Joe Zamora. POINT LOMA--Brown 14, Jordan 12, Antl 11, Javey 11, Brown 6, Proctor 3, Hark 2. Total 69.
