The Renegades developed from discussions between Lester Diaz and former Cal player Monte Buckley. Buckley, who had been coached by Diaz earlier in his career, was playing his final year for the University of California, Berkeley, at the time. The idea was to develop young talent found in the Sacramento area middle schools and mold them into an elite travel team in California. Most of the original players came from California Middle School, where Diaz coached. Players are selected based not only on skills on the court, but on academics. A GPA of 2.5 is needed to play for the Renegades.

The Renegades schedule for this spring and summer is as follows: Pump Easter Tourney, EBO Mats Madness, Las Vegas Big Time, Pump Best of Summer, EBO Sweet 16 and other events.
