Penn. HS Team Sets New
3-Point Shooting Record--(Jan. 23, 2002)

The Associated Press carried a wire story today about a high school team from Pennsylvania, Juniata Valley that may have set a new three-point shooting record in a high school game.  Here's the story:

Juniata Valley's 3-point flurry may be national mark

Pennsylvania's Juniata Valley apparently set a national high school record with its 34 3-pointers in a 128-59 boys' victory against West Branch on Jan. 16.

The record is pending verification by the National Federation of State High School Association's record-keeping department. The record was 32 by Charleston (S.C.) Garrett Academy in 1998. Before that, Juniata Valley had the record with 29 3-pointers in 1997. Against West Branch, Juniata Valley connected on 34 of 86 3-point attempts. The 86 shots from outside the arc are second all-time nationally to Juniata Valley's 94 attempts.

"What was interesting in that game was that our starters were 21 of 41 on 3-pointers but our bench players were something like 13 of 45," Juniata Valley coach Mike Fields said. "We run the same offense whether it is the starters or the reserves out there and we had some reserves who were hitting that game."

Juniata Valley is 11-6, and the Hornets have been playing better since the return of 6-5 senior Travis Boyd. He had arthroscopic surgery on his right knee in December and missed the first 11 games. In those games, Juniata Valley averaged 63 points. Since Boyd's return, the Hornets are averaging 97. Boyd scored 17 points and had 13 rebounds his first game back. Mike Simpson, a 5-10 senior, is also an outstanding shooter from 3-point range, as is point guard Scott Thompson, a 5-9 senior. Thompson also has 123 assists this season. The other starters are Kevin Hagans, 6-4, and Tanner Whittaker, 6-2. Sophomore reserve Chris Lawler, 6-2, has connected on 59 3-pointers and senior Nate Glenny has made 23.

"Travis went down in practice Dec. 11 and we struggled a little without him," Fields said. "But now that he's back you can see the difference in our offensive production. That's because he has a great stroke out there on the wing and he's tough to stop." Fields hopes the Hornets can do well in the District 6 and PIAA Class A playoffs.

So is it really a new national record? It appears to be.   According to a Pennsylvania website known as "Count in Threes" which keeps track of such national records (as well as some State and individual records), Juniata actually has broken its own record, previously set in 1996/97.  Of more interest to local basketball scholars will be the records set by Santa Maria Valley Christian's Chad Bickley (who now also happens to be the coach of Hesperia Christian, currently ranked by SoCalHoops as the No. 4 team in Division V-A of CIF-SS, a team which also lives (and sometimes dies) by the three-pointer.

In Bickley's high school career in the mid-90's, Santa Maria Valley Christian Academy, coached by Chad's father Stan, set a team-record with 24 three pointers in a game against Sacramento Citadel, in December 1994. Bickley also holds two records for most individual three-pointers in a single game, the first place and second place records:

21 Chad Bickley (Santa Maria Christian Academy, CA) vs Sacramento Citadel, CA, 12/28/94 (att. 39)
20 Chad Bickley (Santa Maria Christian Academy, CA) vs New Cuyuma Valley, CA, 2/11/94 (att. 35)

And Bickley also holds the career record for most three pointers in a high school career (507 threes), set from 1992-95.  Interestingly, the person who holds the record for the second-most number of three-pointers is the current coach of Crescenta Valley, Adam Jacobsen, who set his record of 387 at both Glendora and Crescenta Valley from 1990-93.

Here is a sampling of some of the records for three-pointers from Count in Threes:
