Former Verbum Dei Point Guard Marlon
Parmer Quits New Mexico Team--(Jan. 23, 2002)

According to news reports, New Mexico Lobo point guard Marlon Parmer has quit the team.  Parmer's decision Tuesday came a day after one of the team's worst losses -- an 81-51 at-home loss to Utah. Parmer, a 6-foot-2 junior, told the Albuquerque Journal that he was unhappy with coach Fran Fraschilla.  "I'll come back to the team when Fran's gone," Parmer told the Albuquerque Journal, according to an AP wire service report.  "But if he's here, I'm leaving. He blamed me for the losses when it was him being outcoached."

Parmer had been suspended for what the coach called a "team issue'' after New Mexico's near upset of then-No. 18 Gonzaga. Parmer scored 30 points in the Lobos' 95-90 overtime loss.  "We feel like a black cloud has been lifted over our heads today," Fraschilla said Wednesday.  Parmer said the breaking point came Tuesday when Fraschilla threatened to throw him off the team for a comment he made to The Albuquerque Tribune that Utah was a better team and was better coached, The Tribune reported Wednesday.  "We have a group of players and coaches that take the responsibility of being part of the  Lobo basketball program not only seriously, but personally as well," Fraschilla said. "Marlon doesn't seem to understand that."
