CIF HS Games: Results & Details From
Wednesday, 1/2/02--(Jan. 4, 2002)

The second third of the season is beginning, as the tournaments wind down, and league play begins.  For some of the larger leagues (7 or more teams per league), competition among the league teams began last month; for most everyone else, it starts this week.  Many of the LA City Section teams are off, or playing a reduced schedule until school reopens after the winter break, and the same is true this week for many of the Southern Section teams.  Still, there was plenty of action going on this past Wednesday.  Here's what we know, gathered from reports sent to us from team representatives, coaches, players and parents, as well as what we've been able to gather from the local media. If you know of a game that we missed, a score that is unreported, or some details that we're missing, send it in via e-mail.

CIF-Southern Section League Games, Thursday, 12/20/01

Bay League

Mira Costa 43, Morningside 42 --Greg Geier's layup with three seconds to play was the game-winner for Mira Costa (7-6, 1-0). Brandon Hodges scored 14 points to lead the Mira Costa. Morningside is 3-9, 0-1.

Redondo 69, Peninsula 43 --Keith Ellison had 21 points to lead host Redondo (7-5, 1-0). Peninsula is 9-5, 0-1.

Christian League

Ontario Christian 60, Linfield Christian 38 --Greg Talen scored 17 points for Ontario Christian (11-2, 1-0).  Talen, Travis Hoekstra and Chris Garcia all scored in double figures as the Knights improve to 11-2, 1-0. In addition to Talen's 17 points, Hoekstra added 13 points and Garcia finished with 10. Chuck Wilson of Linfield Christian was the game's high scorer with 19 points. Ruben Rodriguez also pulled down 10 rebounds for Linfield.  The Lions (5-5, 0-1)start three freshmen and fell at home to Ontario Christian.  An early bucket by Wilson cut the Knights lead to one, 6-5, but Ontario then opened up a double-digit lead, 20-9 with a 14-4 run. Talen started the run with a steal and a one-handed dunk.  Linfield cut the lead to eight, 25-17, at the half, but was then outscored 15-7 in the third quarter as the Knights took permanent control of the game. Ontario Christian (1-0, 12-1) -- Belko 5, Talen 17, Hoekstra 13, Velasco 1, Garcia 10, Travis 5, Vanderzee 2, Fitzhugh 4, Gabriel 2, Vandenberg 1. Linfield (0-1, 5-5) -- Wald 5, Wilson 19, Lofranco 8, Rodriguez 4, Beckman 2.  Halftime score -- Ontario 25-17. Three-point goals -- Wilson, Lofranco, Belko, Travis, Garcia. Total fouls -- Ontario Christian 13, Linfield 15. Fouled out -- none.

Woodcrest Chr. 47, Calvary Chapel 45-- Murrieta Calvary Chapel led most of the way in its Christian League opener against Woodcrest Christian on Wednesday, but in the end the Warriors came up just short, falling 47-45.  The Royals had the ball and the lead in the final half minute when the Warriors tough defense forced a backcourt violation with 10.3 seconds left, giving them one final chance. But the ensuing inbounds pass went straight to a Woodcrest player and the Royals ran out the clock.  The Warriors (8-5, 0-1 league) got off to a hot start and opened up a seven-point lead late in the first quarter, but a 3-pointer by Matt Shondeff cut the lead to four at the end of the period.  Ryan Evans hit three 3-pointers to score 13 of Calvary Chapel's 15 points in the second quarter to help maintain the lead, which was six at halftime.  But a change in strategy by both teams cooled Evans after the break. The Royals (7-5, 1-0) switched to a defense designed to shut him down.  Meanwhile, Calvary Chapel looked to others for points.  Woodcrest Christian's Cory Wells did most of the damage for the Royals, despite facing a defense stacked against him. He led the team with 16 points and grabbed 12 rebounds.   Ryan Evans led the Warriors with 22 points, Noah Denny pumped in 10, including two 3-pointers and Luke Wilkerson chipped in with nine. Denny and Wilkerson each pulled down 11 rebounds. Woodcrest Christian started the third quarter with a 19-7 run, then lost the lead in the fourth as Murrieta Calvary Chapel went up by four. But a clock malfunction with 3:30 left created a timeout, and Woodcrest Christian responded, holding Murrieta Calvary Chapel scoreless for the remainder of a Christian League contest. Woodcrest Chr. (5-6) -- Wells 14, Lacey 5, Rosset 2, Reyes 8, Wagner 8, Hall 5, Deering 5.  Calvary Chapel (7-4) -- Wilkerson 9, Evans 22, Elder 3, Gausepohl 4, Votah 0, Denny 7. Halftime score -- Calvary Chapel 28-22. Three-point goals -- Deering, Reyes 2, Hall, Lacey, Evans 3, Denny, Elder. Total fouls -- Woodcrest 11, Murr 11. Fouled out -- none.

Golden West League

Tustin 53, Westminster 24--Daniel Cavic scored 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds and Kyle Hall added eight points, four rebounds and four assists as the visiting Tillers (5-11, 1-0) defeated the Lions (0-1 in league).

Northern League

Arroyo Grande 62, Santa Maria 56 --Scott Buhl, a 6'-8" forward, scored 29 points for Arroyo Grande (6-9, 1-0). Sean Hoboboom added 21 points for the Eagles, including four three pointers in the first half, six in the game.  Buhl scored all but two of Arroyo Grande's last 13 points in the Eagles' win over the Saints. Santa Maria fell to 8-6. Rodney Johnson, at 6-6, is the Saints' tallest player, and Santa Maria had no one who could match Buhl inside, who also made 11 of his 15 free throws. Donnie Jones led Santa Maria with 18 points, but he missed all but one of his seven 3-point tries. Rodney Johnson, Santa Maria's leading scorer most of the year, had 11.

Lompoc 68, Righetti 65--At Righetti, Joel Smith had 36 points and 10 rebounds and Chris Lynwood scored 16 for the Braves.  Up 18-11 out of the first quarter and 38-29 at the half, the Braves led by as much as 12 a couple times in the third quarter before Righetti got back in it. Aaron Subido scored 26 points, Ben Paine 18 for the Warriors, who grabbed the lead midway in the fourth, but could not hold it. Lompoc lost Anthony English, who is averaging 15 points a game for the Braves, to fouls in the third quarter. English wound up with only 2 points. Tim Hilley, who scored 7, and Robert Adams, who had 6, picked up some of the slack for Lompoc. Righetti falls to 8-6. Lompoc is now 7-5.

CIF-Southern Section Non-League Games, Thursday, 12/20/01

El Toro North-South Challenge

This was not, strictly speaking, a "tournament" but simply multiple games played at the same location on the same day.

Game 1: El Dorado 90, Marina 59 --David Patten had 35 points, 24 in the first half, to help El Dorado take a 47-29 lead at halftime. Nick Ciaramitaro had 23 points for Marina.

Game 2: El Toro 63, Servite 53 --Patrick Carney scored 18 points, Darryl Best had 16 and Jonathan Johnson finished with 14 for host El Toro (12-4). Erik Hilde scored 12 points for Servite.

Game 3: Capistrano Valley 81, Sonora 66--Capo Valley (12-4) shook off a sluggish start and defeated Sonora, 81-66 after trailing early 6-0, on two  consecutive three-point field goals by Travis Rodgers.  Capo Valley eventually tied the game, 13-13. The Cougars grabbed a 20-18 lead at the end of the first quarter when Pete DeCasas scored at the buzzer.  After a defensive breakdown early in the second quarter Capo Valley managed to outscore Sonora, 28-9, taking a 48-27 halftime lead.  Capo Valley had three three-pointers during that quarter. DeCasas had 12 points in the quarter, and Matt Sweany added 10. In the second half Capo Valley committed five fouls in the first three minutes. Sonora (10-6) took advantage and cut the deficit to 57-42 with 35 seconds remaining in the quarter.  Rodgers had a game-high 27 points. He also converted 11 of 14 free-throw attempts.  Capo Valley built the lead back to 67-49 early in the fourth quarter but the Raiders' Terrance Johnson was fouled while hitting a three-pointer, and made the free throw, cutting the lead to 77-66 with 1:32 remaining. But that was as close as Sonora would get.

Other non-league games

Arrowhead Christian 72, Holy Martyrs 44 --Josh Cloud scored 22 points, incuding five three-pointers, to lead Arrowhead Christian (8-2), which outscored Holy Martyrs, 33-9, in the third quarter.  The ACA Eagles dominated the third quarter with a 33-point effort to hammer the visiting Armens.  Josh Breckley added 15 points and Jacob Goldtry scored 11 points for the Eagles.

Cajon 64, Rialto 40-- The Knights, fresh off their Kiwanis Tournament championship last Saturday against Upland, played more like commoners against a Cajon team led by 6-foot-3 senior guard Donovan Morris. Morris scored a game-high 22 points, pulled down 10 rebounds and had three blocked shots in leading the Cowboys to a 65-40 trouncing at Cajon.  While Morris shined, Rialto sophomore Sean Green had the worst game of his young career. The 6-2 guard, who was MVP of the Kiwanis, scored just one point on 1-of-6 free throws. He was 0-for-2 from the field and had just three rebounds, and he sat with six minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.  Cajon (11-4) beat Rialto 68-48 in the Ocean View Tournament on December 15.  The Knights converted just 10-of-29 (34 percent) free throw attempts, and made just 13-of-41 (32 percent) field goals.  In the second half Cajon went on a 17-0 run over two quarters, capped by a Deandre Gasaway layup (13 points) to give the Cowboys a 61-31 lead late in the fourth. Rialto scored just eight points in the third quarter, and was held scoreless until the 2:26 mark of the fourth when junior 6-3 forward Lavelle Joyner scored a layup. The only Rialto player to score in double figures was senior 5-9 point guard Getano Johnson with 10. Johnson hit a 3-point basket in the game's opening minute to give his team a brief 3-0 lead. Cajon, which shot 46 percent from the field (27-of-59) got double figures from sophomore 6-3 forward Tony Danridge (10 points) and junior 6-2 forward Romale Porter (12). Isa Hall had 16 points and nine rebounds to lead Glendale (8-7) and Riley Van Patten added 13 points and 11 rebounds, including a free throw with two seconds remaining to seal the victory.  Glendale (8-7) led by as much as 17 in the fourth quarter and needed a Riley Van Patten free throw with two seconds remaining to preserve its fourth win in five games since starting forward Hugo Guerrero returned from injury.  He was one of three Nitros to score in double figures, tallying 12 points, grabbing seven rebounds and contributing four assists. Isa Hall led Glendale with a game-high 16 points and nine rebounds. Van Patten, another option in the Nitros' triple-threat offense, had 13 points and 13 rebounds. Mike Gentry had 12, Jeff French 11 and Adam Rich added 10. Crescenta Valley dropped to 11-5. The Falcons were held to seven field goals in the second half. The Falcons, losers of three consecutive games and two straight at home, were rarely an offensive juggernaut against Hart (13-3). Their offense sputtered at crucial junctures throughout the second half, allowing Hart's confidence to grow each time it capitalized on a CV miscue.  CV, which split four games in the 16-team Texas Tournament, built a 30-27 halftime lead Wednesday. Then the wheels fell off as the Falcons could muster 22 second-half points. CV junior guard Jimmy Goffredo finished with a team-high 15 points, but turned the ball over several times when he drew double-team coverage. The Falcons cut Hart's lead to 48-42 with two minutes left in the fourth quarter on a pair of free throws by Goffredo. Goffredo converted on nine of his 10 free-throw attempts. Hart, expected to compete for the Foothill League title this season, sealed the victory with stellar free throw shooting in the final minute. The Indians made five of their six free-throw attempts.
